Sports Flashback April 12-18
April 13, 1966 — Tom Marrier of Escanaba captured top honors in the Intermediate Division of city pool tournament, sweeping past Ron Kern, Jerry Destrampe, Dennis Weber and Lee Robitaille at Club 314. Robitaille was runner-up and Dale Thibodeau placed third in the field of 12.
April 15, 1966 — Herbert McDougall of Germfask, age 70, was crowned champion in the Senior Men’s Division at Club 314, winning two straight games over Bruce Beck, George Bougie and Tim O’Brien before taking three in a row from Terry Sivertsen for the title. Sivertsen defeated Terry Moore, Jack Peltin and Dennis Reeves en route to the finals.
April 16, 1971 — Charlene Savoie rolled her fourth national honor count series this season with 650. Savoie, who bowls for Lambert Electrice, accomplished that by hitting 201-223-226 games at Midway Lanes in Gladstone.
April 17, 1971 — Lois Cox also hit a national honor count series while rolling a 625 at Bowl-a-rama Lanes in Escanaba. Cox, who bowls for Coyne Chevrolet in the Thursday 9 p.m. League, had games of 214-191-220.
April 13, 1981 — Escanaba junior Jean Tolfa was selected Outstanding Athlete in the first Michigan Tech Indoor High School Invitational track meet, winning the girls’ 55-meter dash and anchoring the winning 800 relay. Michelle Hall added a victory in the 800 and helped the Eskymos take the 1600 relay.
Esky’s Troy LaDoucer placed second in boys’ pole vault. Ron Gerstner and Mike Fredenburg were runners-up in pole vault and the 800, respectively.
April 17, 1981 — Escanaba native Dennis Lueneburg, a winter resident in California, teamed with Dave Garfield to capture top honors in the Palm Springs Tennis Center’s tennis tournament in the A-B division. They defeated Richard Hughes and Bob Traeger 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match.
