GARDEN CORNERS — The Big Bay de Noc Black Bears hosted the Hannahville Soaring Eagles in Garden Corners for a twinbill of soccer and volleyball Tuesday night.

The Black Bears swept both ends of the day with a 4-0 win in soccer and 3-0 (25-7, 25- 19, 25-19) win on the court.

On the pitch, Big Bay got out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Cam Miller after which Hannahville locked down their defense to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.

Coming out into the second half, Big Bay made adjustments to pour on the goals.

“We knew we had to play tough and show up tonight,” said coach Alex Ranguette. “We had been stalling these past few games and needed a good win to correct ourselves.”

The second half saw Cam Miller tacking on two more goals as well as Joel Gillespie adding one. Angus McPhee had his third shutout of the year in goal for the Black Bears, who improved to 9-0-1 on the season. They will host Escanaba JV next Monday.

On the court, the Black Bears were able to secure a win in three sets and had a quick start to the matchup with Katelyn DeKeyser on a serving run of 15 points.

“Katelyn was rocking it right out the gate tonight. We needed this momentum to get us going, and she was able to keep her head, not let their timeouts rattle her and rack some points up on the board. Camryn Pederson had the same serving mentality as Kate tonight and had some great serving runs. It’s great to see since we’ve been spending so much time at practice working on serves. ” Coach Angie Paulson stated. “We were missing one of our regular starters tonight, so we changed things up a bit. Piper was able to move into a hitter position rather than set the whole night like she normally does and give some of our younger setters some more experience.”

The Black Bears are on the road for volleyball to Ojibwe Charter on Thursday.
