Eskymos’ tennis avoids a push against Wykons
IRON RIVER — A road trip to Iron River Wednesday ended in victory for the Escanaba Eskymos as they defeated the West Iron County Wykons 5-3.
“This was our first match in nine days, so it was good to get out and compete again,” said Escanaba coach Chris Ogren. “We were a little rusty overall, but we were able to come through and win five matches, so we’ll take it.”
Ogren pointed out the winning performances of Sophia Derkos at No. 1 singles (6-2, 4-6, 10-4) and Erica Moore and Delaney McIntyre at No. 2 doubles (6-3, 6-1).
“No. 2 doubles kept their impressive season going as they looked great again today,” he said. Erica and Delaney are as aggressive as anyone on the team, and it shows in their results. They play extremely smart tennis and always seem to know where to be on the court.
“Sophia Derkos did a great job to rally to win her third set tiebreak today after dropping her second set. Her match was very competitive, and it was good to see her finish strong.”
Escanaba also took wins at No. 4 singles with Sam Manninen (4-6, 6-4, 10-7), No. 3 doubles with Leslie Purcell and Sonya Maki (6-4,6-1) and No. 4 doubles with Molly VanDamme and Lily Newhouse (6-0, 6-0).
Escanaba hosts the Norway Knights this afternoon.
