Braves finish Flivvers

Todd Rose | Daily Press Gladstone’s Alesha Marenger lines up a return during a No. 2 singles match against Kingsford Wednesday in Gladstone.

GLADSTONE — Mother nature was indecisive Wednesday afternoon over whether the Gladstone Braves and Kingsford Flivvers would be able to play tennis at all in Gladstone.

Rain showers forced a delay, but once the courts dried, the teams got after it as Gladstone took the win 7-1.

For the Braves, it was the second scheduled match of the day. The first — against the Munising Mustangs — got underway but was cut short by rain at about its midway point.

“The weather was very precarious all day,” said Braves coach Ryan Barron. “We got through half of the matches with Munising earlier in the day and ultimately got rained out. I didn’t know if we were going to be able to sneak it in today, but I’m glad we did.”

With the season in full swing, Barron is happy with how the Braves squad has progressed at this point and is excited about where things may go as the season continues.

“The girls are starting to hit their stride,” he said. “They are finally piecing it together. I’m hoping they can take this confidence into the home stretch.”

Despite the tricky conditions, the Braves had fun according to No. 1 doubles member Montgomery Pepin, who enjoyed playing against Kingsford’s Macy Holmes and Maggie Menghini alongside teammate Emma Wagner.

“Even though the weather was terrible, it ended up being a good day,” Pepin said. “Our opponents were really fun to play and played well.”

Alesha Marenger of Gladstone and the Flivvers Meagan Dooley had an entertaining match at No. 2 singles that went the way of Marenger 2-0 (6-3, 7-5).

“My match really had me on the move today, but I managed to hit back quite a few of the short shots that were hit to me,” said Marenger. “The second set was close, but I made sure to take advantage of each point.”

The sole Kingsford win of the day came at No. 4 doubles courtesy of Lexie Vross and Ellyce Doenier.

Vross and Doenier defeated Gladstone’s Charlotte Hanson and Aliana Martinez (7-5, 7-6 (0)).

“Lexie and Ellyce had another tie break match,” said Flivvers coach Tracy Rutter. “That seems to be their new normal. I’m proud of them for pulling off another win!”

Rutter also noted the performance of Ashlyn Blaskowski at No. 1 singles, who came up short (6-1, 7-5) against Gladstone’s Addison Trombley.

“Ashlyn played another solid match,” she said. “Although it wasn’t a win, she played great!”

The weather, Rutter commented, made for some struggles for the Flivvers.

“The girls battled the wind, which is something to be expected this time of year,” she said. “They need to step it up. (There are)good days and bad, and today wasn’t the best.”

The Braves are set to take on Gwinn this afternoon at home while Kingsford readies to host the Kingsford Invitational on Friday.
