Wells, Reid double up at Norway

Todd Rose | Daily Press Destiny Bullard (54) leads Kelly LaCount (88), Kevin Peterson (64), Tony Wender (3) and Bob Shiefelfbein (82) in the early laps of the Auto Value Super Stock heat race Friday night at the Norway Speedway.

NORWAY – Friday night’s action at the Norway Speedway was sponsored by Fine Lines Painting & Drywall and Incredible Bank – featuring the Ed Hedlund Memorial for the 141 Auto Sales Stock Car division – and played host to a variety of racing options for fans.

In the Bink’s Coca-Cola Super Late Model division – which featured a twin bill of 20-lap features due to the night’s car count – it was Jason Wells (Kingsford) sweeping the night’s racing.

Both features saw Wells work his way through the field to take the victories, though each presented challenges.

Wells took the first 20-lapper – a race run with no cautions – ahead of Scott Stanchina (Kingsford) and Greg Haese (Manitowoc, Wis.).

The second feature capped off the night and included only one yellow flag for a spin by Bruce White.

“The first race, the track was very free and (I) just had to let the car roll through the corner and wait to get on the gas, but it rotated very well,” said Wells. “We made some adjustments to the back of the car to tighten it up for the second feature, and the car was better and had better drive off.”

In Wells’ own words, the win felt “really good.”

“(It was) very rewarding to give the guys that work on the car a win to show that their hard work pays off,” he said. “It’s very hard to win a feature at Norway Speedway with the amount of talented drivers and the level of cars that compete week-to-week, so to win two in one night felt really good.”

The wins also had a bonus for Wells.

“My uncle sponsored the event on Friday, so it was nice to give him and his work crew a fun night at the race track,” he said.

Wells thanked all of his sponsors as well as his parents, Shawn Ellis, Ricky Holmstrom and his fans.

A 25-lap feature was on tap for the 141 Auto Sales Stock Car division with the annual Ed Hedlund Memorial.

A solitary caution for Pete Fraser coming to a stop in the infield slowed the field six laps into the race. They went incident-free the last 19 laps.

Jon Menpaa (Kingsford) and Todd Schmidt (Spread Eagle, Wis.) separated themselves from the pack to duel it out in the closing laps.

Menpaa took his time running alongside and behind Schmidt until the last lap when he pounced and took the win in the final corner.

John Ostermann (Norway) finished in the third position after escaping a snarling pack of cars from the fourth spot on back.

After a barrage of cautions – including three in as many laps (lap 12-14) – Anthony Shiefelbein (Pemine, Wis.) withstood a late-race restart to take the Auto Value Super Stock Feature ahead of the Norway pair of Andy Gerwig and John Mattia Jr.

Brent Ayotte (Hermansville) dominated the majority of the MC Signs and Graphics Four Cylinder feature, but a caution with a handful of laps foiled his race.

On the restart, Elliott Reid (Faithorn) jumped to Ayotte’s inside and took the lead with five to go and never looked back taking the win several short laps later.

“I’ve been at this for a while, but this win was especially fulfilling because there is some good competition there,” said Reid. “I really felt like I was patient and took what they gave me and ended up on top.”

Reid – who doubled up on wins with a heat race victory – also commented on how well his car hooked up and the respect among the division’s drivers.

“The car has never handled better than during that heat race. I just went around everybody in the fifth lane, and that was awesome,” he said. “I had a lot more fun racing (Friday) than I have in a long time. It was good, clean, competitive racing. We were really, really, at each other because points are tightening up, but there is a lot of respect there.”

Cory Grondine (Hermansville) followed Reid across the line in second.

The Norway Speedway hosts racing once again Friday with racing at 7 p.m. central time for Werner Electric Night.

Qualifying gets underway at 5:30.
