Mondeik, Pontbriand win Auto Value round 2

Todd Rose | Daily Press Justin Mondeik (44) leads Jason Wells (31), Braison Benett (119) and the rest of the Bink’s Coca-Cola Super Late Model Fast Dash field Friday night at Norway Speedway.

NORWAY — The winning ways of Justin Modeik (Gleason, Wis.) and Joey Pontbriand (Norway) continued at the Norway Speedway’s second round of Auto Value Racing Friday night as both drivers have crossed into double digits for victories in the 2021 season.

While Mondeik hit the 10-mark to close out July, Pontbriand hit it Friday and crossed it Saturday at the Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells.

Mondeik took the Bink’s Coco-Cola Super Late Model win — his 12th overall win of 2021 — in an entertaining race one day after getting win 11 at State Park Speedway in Wausau, Wis.

Scott Stanchina (Kingsford) controlled things up front for the better part of the race with constant pressure from Mondeik, Chad Butz (Green Bay, Wis.) and Braison Bennett (Neenah, Wis.).

The four drivers battled at the top end of the field around the halfway mark of the race with bumper-to-bumper and door-to-door racing.

Bennett’s race went south with just under 20 laps to go as he cut down a left rear tire and spun into the grass and dirt on the outside of turn three.

He rejoined the action one lap down.

On the restart, Mondeik tried the high side, then forced his way past Stanchina on the inside. He led the final 15 laps on his way to the win.

“We were trying to get around on the top, and I think we could have got it done,” Mondeik said about his race-winning move. “It seemed the 8 car (Butz) kind of fell back a little bit, so we were able to get back to the bottom and then work on the 41 (Stanchina) and have a little bit of space. It was an exciting race. It was a good one to win.”

Since first coming to the Norway Speedway in 2019, Mondeik has taken to the track quite well with a multitude of race wins including the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Stateline Challenge.

“I think we are three out of five here this year,” Mondeik said. “We probably should have won the first Auto Value race. There was another night we came on a weekly night, and we really struggled and took third. We were a little off that night, so we came back to the Stateline with a different baseline package, and it seemed to be better.

“Everything we did last year, we could really do no wrong here, and we started here with that (baseline) this year, and we were getting beat. So, you always need to find more speed, and I feel like we are on that path again.”

The flat 1/3 mile track, Mondeik says, fits his driving style.

“You can’t overcharge the corners, so you’ve got to back that up,” he said. “And you’ve got it pointed straight and have good drive off. You can’t be too aggressive; otherwise, you’re going to burn your stuff up here. Normally, flat tracks seem to suit me better.”

Butz and Stanchina rounded out the top three.

In the Auto Value Super Stock feature, Pontbrian took the lead after working his way from deep in the pack with 16 to go.

Despite an opening lap yellow for a jam up including Bob Schiefelbein (Pembine, Wis) and Ryan Wender (Upper Pine Creek), the majority of the race ran caution-free with the only other yellow flying with 20 to go for Tony Wender (Kingsford) looping it out of turn two.

On a weekly basis, it seems no matter where Pontbriand starts, he finds his way to the top half of the field. But, he doesn’t take the credit for that.

“The credit goes to my dad,” Pontbriand said. “We work on this car all week, and we hear the different people saying the cars cheated up and this and that. It’s just meticulously maintained and prepped, and it’s just the consistency more than anything, so the hats goes off to my dad for that.

“I’d just like to thank the people that help me. Without them, none of this would be possible.”

Prior to getting win 11, Pontbriand was just happy about getting number 10 on Friday night while hoping for the best Saturday at the Dells, where he entered that night three points out of the lead of their track title.

The win there Saturday — his fourth at the track — no doubt helped his cause for the championship.

“Once we started winning a little bit, it was cool to get to 10. It’s just an unbelievable year,” he said.

Behind Pontbriand were Anthony Schiefelbein (Pembine, Wis.) and Andy Casavant (Appleton, Wis.).

In the 141 Auto Sales Stock Car feature, Zackery Krans (Kingsford) led B.J. Schoneck (Marion, Wis.) and Todd Schmidt (Spread Eagle, Wis.) across the line, while it was Brent Ayotte (Hermanszille) ahead of Elliot Reid (Faithorn) and Dean Bellmore (Hermansville) in the MC Signs & Graphics Four Cylinder feature.

Norway takes the green flag for another week of action Friday night at 7:00 p.m. central time.

Qualifying gets underway at 5:30 with stands opening at 5:00.
