Braves’ girls win opener
MARQUETTE — The Gladstone girls opened their tennis season on a high note here Thursday, earning a 6-2 victory over the Marquette Redettes.
“I was proud of how our girls performed today,” said Braves coach Ryan Barron. “There were lots of jitters, at least for the first few matches. Once they started getting in the groove, they started to hit their shots the way I know they can. I love seeing the heart these ladies play with. I am looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Gladstone’s Addie Trombley defeated Hosanna Brindle 6-3, 6-1 in No. 1 singles.
“This was my first time playing at No. 1 singles, so I was a little bit nervous at first,” said Trombley. “My opponent was very competitive, and it was a battle for each point.”
Alesha Marenger took a 6-2, 6-4 decision from Anna Martinson at No. 2 singles, and Tia Schoen topped Lexi Hummerstrom 6-3, 6-0 in No. 3.
The Braves’ Montgomery Pepin and Emma Wagner were 6-4, 6-4 winners at No. 1 doubles.
“We were really nervous at first, but once we got going we did good,” said Pepin. “Our opponents played well and were very competitive, but we still had a lot of fun.”
In No. 2 doubles, Sophia Rosa and Reese Herioux defeated Lyndsey Lake-Sophie Kyrsinalsles 6-2, 6-4.
“Our match was really a great starting point for our season,” said Rosa. “We played some tough opponents. It got close for a while in our second set, but our serves really came through with getting us our win. We’re just really happy we were able to get a win for our team at No. 2 doubles.”
Maddie Barron-Rachel Krouth added a 7-5, 6-4 triumph for the Braves at No. 3.
“It was a very close match,” said Krouth. “Both teams played hard. Our team was able to pull ahead through great communication and teamwork.”
The Braves visit Escanaba for a dual meet Monday at 11 a.m.
