Bucs earn sweep of Red Wave

Todd Rose | Daily Press Bark River’s Tyler Racicot earns a hit against Menominee Thursday in Bark River.

BARK RIVER — The Bark River Bucs earned a doubleheader sweep at home as they beat the Menominee Red Wave 10-6 and 14-4 Thursday evening in Bark River.

“I thought we played a really good two games,” said Bucs manager Matt Richer Jr. “The first game, we had a couple guys show up late, so we started out with eight guys. You could tell Max (Hall) was trying to strike people out — obviously because we only had eight guys out on the field. But, I think once our ninth guy came, we kind of settled in, the bats started going, and we just took off from there.”

Hall (four strikeouts, five walks, and seven hits given up for six earned runs) pitched through five to earn the win, with Noah Gorzinski putting the seal on the first game in the sixth for the save and a 10-6 win.

Wyatt Riley (two strikeouts, one walk and six allowed hits for four earned runs) was atop the mound for the whole second game — a contest that ended via the mercy rule, 14-4, in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to nine Bucs’ runs.

With bases loaded, Nick Javurek got on base with a walk, bringing Tyler Racicot home.

Josiah Javurek had an RBI single, Johnnie Robinette a three-run double and Racicot a two-run single to put the cap on the game.

All four of the Red Wave runs came in the top of the fourth, with Michael Hensley hitting a two-run single and James Coldren and Ashton Barstow also notching RBIs.

“Wyatt started out really good. I don’t think he gave up a hit until the third inning,” Richer said. “They got him a little bit in the fourth inning, but I thought he pitched really good.”

Richer also mentioned the batting performance of Cody Cortinas among those that stood out.

“The bats were the biggest thing today. We had four or five out to the fence. I thought we hit really good,” he said. “Cody Cortinas, he’s a younger kid, and today he was just kind of hitting the crap out of the ball. He played really good.”

Zach Starzyski started the second game for Menominee and was relieved by Coldren in the fourth.

“We tried something tonight,” said Menominee manager John Lauzer. “I didn’t want to throw too much with my pitchers. We haven’t played in over a week and a half, so I wanted to make sure our arms were fine. So, each kid was on a fifty pitch count tonight.”

Despite the score, Lauzer said there were some positives in the game.

“I’ve seen a lot of good things, and we’re still working out the kinks of who’s going to be starter and who’s not,” he said. “I got a pretty good idea tonight, (but) Bark River hit the ball well tonight.”

The Bucs are in action today in Escanaba against the Iron Mountain Golds who also play the Cubs at Al Ness Field.

Starting at $3.50/week.
