KINGSFORD — Area girls’ track teams finished well behind the leaders in the Upper Peninsula Finals here Saturday.

A trio of area athletes, however, earned individual titles on this hot and humid day at Flivver Field.

Mid Peninsula junior Landry Koski was seeded eighth going into the Division 3 1600-meter run, then won it in an exciting fashion.

Ontonagon captured its first team title in five years with 73 points, followed by Rudyard 64, Stephenson 54 1/2, Brimley 43 and Mid Pen 41.

In the 1600, Ewen-Trout Creek senior Elise Besonen and Bessemer freshman Natalie Stone were the leaders until the final 200 meters when Koski and Rudyard sophomore Tristin Smith made their move.

Koski, much to the delight of the Mid Pen faithful, then surged to victory in the home stretch.

“This is my favorite race,” she said. “I knew I had to beat two girls to place. I knew about Gwen Kangas (of Chassell), but I didn’t know about the girl from Bessemer. When I saw they were (seeded) in the 5:40s, I knew I had to pick it up. After the first 800, I felt I had a chance, and with the Rudyard girl right next to me (in the last 200 meters), I knew I had to kick it in.”

Smith was runner-up (5:40.69), followed by Stone (5:42.82) and Besonen (5:44.52).

“It was really nice to see Landry win the 1600,” senior teammate Daisy Englund said after winning the 800 (2:30.75). “She’s so determined. It’s such a hot day, and we never had competition like this. I didn’t want to get boxed in. With 200 meters to go, I knew I had to kick it in. It was a relief to win the 800.”

Englund was followed by Ontonagon sophomore Makennah Uotila (2:32.81), Rudyard’s Karlee Mayer (2:34.24) and Besonen (2:34.72).

Englund was runner-up in the 100 (13.93), and Koski took third in the 3200 (13:22.85).

West Iron County edged Ishpeming 108-104 1/2 for its first D-2 crown in five years. They were followed by Bark River-Harris 80 and three-time defending champion St. Ignace 71.

BR-H freshman Makenzie Hoffmeyer won long jump (15-5) and placed second in the 200 (27.56)

Marquette retained its D-1 championship with 120 points, followed by Sault Ste. Marie 94 and Menominee 71.

Escanaba opened with a victory in the 3200 relay in a season-best 10:12.54.

Junior Ciara Ostrenga, who anchored that relay, was runner-up in the 400 (1:01.7), and Gladstone senior Ahna Larson placed second in the 300 hurdles (47.57) and long jump (15-6 1/2).

Marquette sophomore Baux Trombley, who collected four firsts, anchored the 400 relay, which set the U.P. record in 50.11 seconds and topped the previous best (51.22) by Gladstone in 2007.

Sault senior Emily McLean set the U.P. shot put record at 42-8 1/2, topping her previous record (39-2) from two years ago.

The Central Michigan University recruit uncorked a school-record toss of 46-8 in the Straits Area Conference meet May 24 and had a winning throw of 43-4 in the Northern Michigan Meet of Champions at Gaylord June 1.
