Indians top Blues for 1st win
Todd Rose | Daily Press Gladstone’s Ryan Polley leads off of second base ahead of Marquette’s Kyle Frusti against Marquette Tuesday in Gladstone.
GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Indians presented their entire coaching staff with its first victory here Tuesday night in a 5-2 conquest of Marquette Blues.
Gladstone snapped a 2-2 deadlock by scoring three times without the ball leaving the infield in the sixth inning.
John Soderman gave the Indians a 3-2 lead on a wild pitch, and Tyler Darmogray and Mason LaChance added the insurance runs on a throwing error.
Soderman and LaChance reached base on infield singles, and Darmogray got hit by a pitch.
“Our kids responded well after a tough weekend,” said Indians’ manager Scott Kwarciany. “The kids are starting to gain some confidence, and the energy level is getting higher in the dugout.”
The Indians (1-4) opened the scoring on Dayton Bernson’s single to center in the third, then gained a two-run cushion on Owen Trombley’s sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Marquette (2-3) missed a scoring opportunity in the second when Jacob Peterson, Brady Wright and Justin Wenk opened the inning with consecutive singles to left.
Peterson, however, was thrown out trying to steal second and Wright and Wenk got stranded on first and second.
“They (Indians) did a nice job,” said Marquette coach Derek Swajanen. “Defensively, I thought we did a nice job, but when you don’t score after getting three singles, it’s going to cost you. It seems like we have that one inning where we lose our focus. Once we eliminate that, we’ll be okay. We have a lot of talent on this team. I feel comfortable where we’re at.”
Both teams collected six hits and committed an error. Bernson and LaChance had two apiece for Gladstone. Wright led Marquette with a pair.
Aedan Creten took the win in relief of Caden Alworden, who struck out four, walked one and allowed two runs on six hits through five innings. Creten fanned three, walked two and hit a batter in the final two frames.
“Caden performed well after not pitching for nearly a year,” said Kwarciany. “Aedan hadn’t had a lot of time on the mound but handled the pressure real well. It’s good for the guys to get a win because this boosts their morale. I’m real happy for them.”
Dakota Maki absorbed the loss in relief of Hayden Rockhill, who whiffed five, walked three, hit a batter and gave up two runs on four hits through four frames. Maki struck out two, walked none and hit a batter in two innings.
Gladstone stranded nine baserunners, and Marquette left seven on the base paths.
The Indians, who hosted Bark River Wednesday, face Watertown, Wis. in the opening round of the Marinette Firecracker tournament Friday.
Marquette visited Escanaba Wednesday and hosts Negaunee in a twinbill tonight at 5.
The Blues also head to Marinette this weekend, opening against Green Bay Preble Friday, then play four times next week.
“We play a lot of baseball in a short period of time, but we have to build,” said Swajanen.
In Tuesday’s preliminary game, Marquette Red defeated the Gladstone Junior Indians 12-3.
