Superior Central takes 2 from Jets
HERMANSVILLE — The Superior Central Cougars picked up two wins (11-1, 5-1) against the North Central Jets Tuesday evening in Hermansville.
“Way too many errors and the bats are far too silent,” said North Central coach Jason Mercier. “It’s all work and our 13 underclassmen are getting in plenty of reps.”
Wyatt Riley started game two on the mound for the Jets and was replaced by Adrian Mercier after he gave up eight runs.
Mercier pitched five innings and struck out nine.
North Central had six errors in the game and stranded nine baserunners.
The only run for the Jets was an RBI from a Riley double in the third.
As coach Mercier put it, game one was a ‘battle of the sophomores’ as North Central’s Jesse Sampson and Superior Central’s Hayden Rockhill squared off on the mound.
Sampson had 10 strikeouts in the game.
“Easily the best Jesse has pitched all year. His command was spot on. He also didn’t let the shabby defense get him down.
“With Rockhill for Superior Central and Jesse and Adrian pitching like they did tonight, it’s definitely a glimpse of the future.”
Coach Mercier hopes the foundations being laid this year help the Jets grow in the coming years.
“I can only hope between this year and next we mature and put in the work to make the easy plays,” he said. “No excuses, we move on to the next one.”
That next one will be in Hermansville as the Jets host Norway for a doubleheader.
