Eskymos’ tennis shuts out Flivvers

KINGSFORD — The Escanaba Eskymos made a clean sweep of singles and doubles flights, posting an 8-0 tennis victory over the Kingsford Flivvers.

While happy with the performance, Eskymos coach Tom Penegor noted the Eskymos could still get better as the season continues to wind down.

“One of our goals is to have fun and improve each match,” Penegor said. “I felt today, some of the guys did, but some of the guys didn’t. It’s a concern, but I pointed it out to the guys, and hopefully, we can make the needed adjustments.

“We still have time to improve, but we’re running out of time.”

Connor Smale topped Ben Cook 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in the day’s closest match at No. 4 singles, and Shaun Beauchamp defeated Noah Johnson 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.

In No. 3 doubles, Tanner McDonald and Jordan Nance took a 6-4, 6-1 decision from Charlie Christensen and Jacob Saari.

Brayden Roberts-Joe Hubert added a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Michael Occhietti-Blake Wonfor at No. 4 doubles.

Penegor noted the warm weather — mid to high 70’s — as an added variable in playing.

“The conditioning is more of a factor,” he said. “Especially if you’re playing all day like these matches (we have) coming up.”

The Eskymos travel to Menominee Thursday.
