Esky tennis ties with Redmen
MARQUETTE — The Escanaba Eskymos tried some different combinations in a 4-4 tennis tie with the Marquette Redmen here Monday.
Esky’s Viktor Pospisil defeated Nick Olivier 7-6 (9-3), 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
The Redmen, however, won the remaining singles flights.
“They had a strong singles lineup,” said Esky coach Tom Penegor. “Their strength is in their singles from what we’ve seen today. That was a close match at No. 1 singles. That was the first time Viktor played No. 1 singles, and he adjusted well. He played a tough guy. We had one player in his regular spot. We mixed and matched.”
Esky’s Shaun Beauchamp, playing at his normal No. 2 singles spot, dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Connor Johnson.
Tanner McDonald and Jordan Nance provided the Eskymos with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bobby Caron and Enzo Stabile in No. 1 doubles and Dawson Williams-Evan St. Peter posted a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Toby Camilli-Ray Modell at No. 2.
At No. 4 doubles, Esky’s Cayden Lyyski-Parker LaFond outlasted Liam McFadden-Andrew King 7-5, 6-3.
“That was Parker and Cayden’s first varsity match, and they beat Marquette’s normal No. 4 doubles,” said Penegor. “That was a big win. No. 1 and 2 doubles were also big wins. They moved higher into the doubles lineup and did well. Tanner McDonald and Jordan Nance did a good job at No. 1 doubles, and Dawson Williams and Evan St. Peter also did well at No. 2 doubles.
“We have 29 kids on the team. We’re blessed to have more kids to pick from. We had a chance to see some of our younger guys play, and it was a good experience for them.”
The Eskymos visit Kingsford today at 4:30.
