Wolves rout Mustangs to remain undefeated

CARNEY — Tessa Wagner proved to be a tough match-up for the Munising girls here Saturday.

So did the rest of the Carney-Nadeau Wolves in a 64-24 basketball rout of the Mustangs.

The 6-foot-3 junior center scored 27 points in this Skyline Central Conference contest, helping the Wolves improve to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the league.

“Tessa is a tough match-up for just about anybody,” said C-N coach Ken Linder. “We had three score in double digits. We’ll take that anytime. We had pretty good balance.”

Senior Heidi Kirschner added 11 points and sophomore forward Shae Linder had 10 for C-N, which led 23-0 following a reverse layup and free throw by senior guard Haley Ernest with five minutes, 49 seconds left in the second quarter.

“She (Wagner) is absolutely the real deal,” said Munising coach Matt Mattson. “She’s a fantastic player who always provides tough match-ups. You don’t see many girls who are 6-3.”

The Mustangs (1-4 overall, 1-3 SCC) got on the board 37 seconds later on a lay-in by junior Jenna Matson.

C-N, which led 31-6 at halftime, started the third stanza with a 13-2 run and extended its advantage to 44-8 on an eight-foot set shot by Wagner at 3:10.

The Wolves led 51-17 after the third frame and by as much as 59-19 following a layup by senior Taylor Kedsch, set up on a pass from senior Chloe Grand midway through the fourth.

“Our execution was real good today,” said coach Linder. “We’ve been working on it. We had been a little sloppy in the last couple games. Our defense has been good all year, and I’m real happy with our performance today.”

Matson scored 12 points for the Mustangs, who committed 17 turnovers.

The Wolves had 15 miscues, including a few against Munising’s full-court pressure defense early in the fourth quarter.

“Jenna played all right,” said Mattson. “She plays hard all the time. We have to build around her a little. We wanted to pick up the pace and condition the girls. We wanted to get them to go up and down the court a little bit. In the second half, we played better than in the first. They weren’t missing their shots, and we couldn’t get one to go down.”

The Wolves, who also won the JV game, 60-41, host North Dickinson Monday. The Mustangs host Engadine Monday.
