Soaring Eagles sweep Ojibwe Charter

HANNAHVILLE — It was a clean sweep for the Hannahville Soaring Eagles this weekend as their girls’ and boys’ teams posted two basketball victories apiece over Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter.
The Hannahville girls ended a five-game losing steak by taking a 52-43 decision here Friday night.
Seventh-grader Janessa Platt then led the Soaring Eagles (3-7) with 20 points in Saturday’s 37-31 triumph, matching her team-leading total from Friday.
“This is huge going into the Northern Lights League tournament,” said Hannahville coach Michelle Carne. “The girls are playing with more confidence. We’ve gone through our ups and downs, but that doesn’t mean anything as long as we come together at the right time.”
Hannahville led 34-27 following a fast break layup by Ava Eagle with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.
Ojibwe trimmed its deficit to 34-30 on a seven-foot set shot and free throw by Ashlynn Turner with four minutes, 43 seconds left in the contest.
Platt then gave the Soaring Eagles what proved to be an insurmountable 36-30 advantage on a layup at 3:24.
Hannahville hit just 3-of-18 free throws and committed 27 turnovers. The Eagles were 8-of-23 from the line and had 18 miscues.
Noah Turner scored 10 points, including a buzzer-beating 3-point shot to pull Ojibwe with 24-21 at halftime.

Mason Thunder sank 9-of-11 free throws and scored 19 points Saturday to pace the Hannahville boys past the Eagles 69-55.
Hannahville senior Joe Larson hit a fast-break layup on a pass from Austin Willis for a 19-6 lead late in the first quarter.
The Soaring Eagles (8-4) extended their lead to 35-18 at halftime and led by as much as 61-40 following a pair of free throws by sophomore DeShawn Metzger, with 4:45 left in the contest.
Damon Sagataw added 12 points, and Larson had 11 for Hannahville, which had 22 turnovers.
Marquis Harmon drained nine 3-point shots and scored a career-high 38 points for Ojibwe. He sank five of his trifectas in the fourth, including one from top of the key, which brought the Eagles within 64-55 in the final minute.
Larson hit two free throws with 51.5 seconds remaining, and Mequon Jackson concluded the scoring on a 20-foot set shot from the left wing.
“We wanted to play a competitive game,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “At the end, we let our younger guys play. They came back, but that’s okay. I thought our younger guys did a decent job rebounding. We struggled quite a bit against their 1-3-1 (zone) but did a good job defensively. We had a lot of unforced errors, probably about 10. We need to clean that up before the tournaments.”
Larson led the way in Friday’s 51-34 triumph with 22 points. Halfaday had 10.
Hannahville, which hosts the NLL semifinals and finals this weekend, committed 22 turnovers Saturday. Ojibwe had 20.
