Mid Pen Wolverines slash Cougars
ST. NICHOLAS — The Mid Peninsula girls basketball team put in extra effort for Senior Night, and it showed as the Wolverines built up a first-half advantage to cruise to a 49-20 win over Superior Central Friday at Mid Peninsula.
“(It was) Senior Night,” Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell said. “I think the girls were pumped. Our two seniors, Daisy (Englund) and Allyson (Lancour) played great and (demonstrated great) leadership on the floor.
“Allyson had 10 rebounds, and she played a great game defensively, holding Emma Rutter to zero points.”
Mid Pen outscored the Cougars 16-9 in the first quarter and 14-7 in the second to lead 30-15 at half time.
Englund was a major contributor to the first-half cushion.
“Daisy played all out again,” Croasdell said. “She had 16 in the first half.”
Landry Koski also collected 12 for the Wolverines.
“Landry Koski also did very well defensively,” Croasdell said. “She had some nice cuts and inside shots.”
Leading the way for the Cougars was Riley Johnson with 10.
“Defensively, I was very proud,” Croasdell said. “The way we played defense was (great). When we got them down like that, it kind of took the wind out of their sails. I think that was the biggest part. We had the momentum and just kind of held on from there.
“Our free-throw shooting was great. Six turnovers was a big thing too. You win a lot of games with just six turnovers.”
Mid Peninsula, which won the JV game 48-24, visits Big Bay de Noc Monday.
