Esky boys stay on top
ESCANABA — There wasn’t a lot of movement at the top, but there was some shuffling down the list in the recently released Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association U.P. basketball poll.
Escanaba maintained the top spot on the Division 1-3 Boys list, adding two more wins (66-24 over Sault Ste. Marie and 60-45 over Kingsford) to move to 11-0.
Iron Mountain earned the same and held its position in second place with an 11-0 record.
Marquette went 2-1 (59-35 over Gladstone, 78-38 over Sault Ste. Marie and falling 57-51 to Menominee) over the week to finish it 7-3 and earn the third spot, and Bark River-Harris — who also landed in the ninth spot on the Associated Press Division 3 Michigan Boys Prep Poll — remained undefeated with two more wins (North Dickinson 60-17 and Superior Central 64-24) to sit at 11-0.
Others receiving votes were Westwood and Jeffers.
In Division 4, Ewen-Trout Creek maintained its lead with an 11-1 record, and Rudyard kept its second place with one more win to move to 8-1.
Munising (9-1) switched places with Dollar Bay (9-2) to take third while Dollar Bay dropped down to fourth.
Stephenson (7-3) knocked Chassell off the list and earned the fifth spot.
Others receiving votes were Chassell.
In Division 1-3 Girls, Sault Ste. Marie (10-0) earned three wins over the week and supplanted Menominee (8-0), who dropped down to second, at the number one spot by one point.
St. Ignace (6-3) maintained its three spot, as did Calumet (9-0) at fourth.
Negaunee (7-2) was joined at fifth in a tie by Escanaba (4-4), which went 1-1 (58-3 over Negaunee and a 68-64 loss to St. Ignace) to maintain .500.
Others receiving votes were Bark River-Harris (0-2).
For Division 4, Ewen-Trout Creek (12-0) stayed on top, and Carney-Nadeau — who earned the third spot in the Associated Press Dvision 4 Michigan Girls Prep Poll — (12-0) maintained its second position with two wins (67-22 over Forest Park and 51-30 over Stephenson).
Baraga (7-3) and Cedarville (5-1) remained at third and fourth respectively, and Ontonagon (8-2) kept its place at the fifth slot.
Others receiving votes were Pickford (6-2).
