ESCANABA — Lennox Peacock achieved a major milestone while helping the Escanaba Eskymos win a pair of baseball games here Saturday.
The Esky senior fired a two-hitter and set a school record in career strikeouts in a 10-0 conquest of Norway in five innings at Al Ness Field.
Esky then defeated Rudyard 6-2 in the nightcap on this sunny, breezy and warm afternoon.
Peacock fanned six in the opener, running his career total to 253, six more than the previous best by Brad Gauthier in 2006.
“That was satisfying,” Peacock said. “I did a lot of work over the last four years. That was a big record to break. My velocity felt like it was pretty good which I thought kept them off balance. We had to come out and take care of business. As a team it felt really good to win our last home games and to go out on top as a senior feels really good. I think we’re ready for the rest of our regular season games. It’s a matter of cleaning up a few things before heading into the post-season.”
The Eskymos led 3-0 after two innings, then cashed in on three errors while scoring five times in the third.
Peacock’s single to leftfield gave Esky a four-run cushion.
Owen Fields singled to left to make it 5-0 and Peacock scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 advantage.
Esky extended its lead to 8-0 on a fielding error in the third and raised the score to 9-0 on a single to center by Fields in the fourth.
Peacock and Fields finished with two hits apiece.
“Lenny setting the school strikeout record was absolutely the highlight of the day,” Esky coach Scott Hanson said. “Getting our 20th victory this season against Rudyard was also a big win. We didn’t play our best baseball in the second game, although they played a good game.”
Dalten Savoie gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead on a fielding error.
Esky (20-5) tied the score on a grounder to short by Ashton Rymkos in its half of the first, then took advantage of two errors while scoring four times in the second for a 5-1 lead.
The Bulldogs (12-11) trimmed their deficit to 5-2 on a single to left by Kyle Postma.
Esky ended the scoring on senior Graham Johnson’s single to left in the sixth.
“We responded the way I hoped we would,” Rudyard coach Billy Mitchell said. “We gave Norway some extra outs and they took advantage of it. We started hitting the ball better about two weeks ago and our pitching has been good. Being able to compete as well as we did with Escanaba after getting blown out in the first game says a lot about the guys. These are the teams we like to play to help us get ready for districts.”
Johnson finished with two of Esky’s eight hits. Lou Mayer had a pair for Rudyard.
The Eskymos, who pitched by committee, visit Gladstone for a doubleheader Tuesday.
“We were trying to make sure we had people available for Gladstone,” Hanson said.
In the previous game, Landon Debakker tossed a three-hitter, fanned 11 and walked one as Norway beat Rudyard 14-1 in five frames.
The Knights broke the game open in the fourth when they scored 10 runs, including three on a fielding miscue.
Cameron Varda went 2-for-2 for the Knights, who improved to 15-6 and visit Bark River-Harris for a twinbill today at 4. Savoie had two hits for the Bulldogs.
“We had a good inning,” Norway coach Tony Adams said. “I was disappointed in the first game. We weren’t ready to play. Esky has a good team, but that shouldn’t have been a shortened game. The three errors we made in the third inning killed us. Not knowing where to go with the ball shouldn’t be happening this far into the season.”
