Braves top Miners

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone girls got plenty of point production from junior Claire van Ginhoven here Tuesday night, but it wasn’t quite enough to keep them from dropping a 48-42 basketball decision to the Negaunee Miners.

van Ginhoven scored 21, including nine in the fourth quarter of this Mid-Peninsula Conference match-up.

“Claire went real hard to the basket and finished strong tonight,” said Braves coach Andy Cretens. “She shot well from the line, and (sophomore) Aliana Martinez hit two long shots, which changed the game. This was the first time she was able to play a full game. We still have a few girls out but expect to have everybody back Saturday. We moved some girls around and stayed close all the way. I thought we played pretty well, considering.”

van Ginhoven sank six free throws in fourth, including a pair to bring the Braves within 41-39 with three minutes, 54 seconds left to play. She was 8-of-10 from the line.

A layup by junior guard Summer Dudo on a pass from senior guard Emilia Palomaki gave the Miners (11-2 overall) a 43-39 lead at 2:09.

Negaunee then extended its lead to 46-39 on a layup and free throw by junior forward Alyssa Hill with less than a minute remaining.

“It was good to see our girls respond and make plays down the stretch,” said Negaunee coach Mike O’Donnell. “Free throw shooting has kind of been our Achilles heel. It was nice to see them step up and knock down a few.”

Van Ginhoven drained a jump shot from the right corner to trim Gladstone’s deficit to 46-42 in the final minute.

Hill led the Miners with 20 points, including a layup with 40 seconds remaining. Nelson sank four 3-point shots among her 14 points.

“We knew Nelson was a good shooter but needed to do a better job on her,” said Cretens. “We let her get too many 3s on us.”

Senior center Megan Crow added eight points, and Martinez had seven for the Braves (7-5 overall), who end their regular season at Marquette tonight at 7. The Miners host Westwood in their regular-season final Friday.

“Megan’s size bothered Alyssa, but she played hard down there (under the basket),” said O’Donnell. “We wanted to concentrate on the big three. I thought we did a good job on Crow, but van Ginhoven did a nice job attacking the basket, and Martinez hit a couple shots which is a credit to them.”
