Boys

Bark River-Harris at Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — The Bark River-Harris boys basketball team made some vital corrections at halftime and pulled away from the Ishpeming Hematites in the third quarter to earn their second win, 66-51, Wednesday in Ishpeming.

“We were playing sloppy coming off last night’s game,” Broncos coach Marc Zawacki said. “We started off slow and weren’t communicating. We said we needed to be aggressive and communicate. Zach (Robinette) came out aggressive and scored his six (points) in the third. We talked about being aggressive and that’s what we did.”

Trenton Wood-Keshick shined offensively for the second night in a row, collecting 26 points.

“We’re just going to ride that the streak he’s on,” Zawacki said. “He’s doing a lot of good things. He creates a match-up problem. It’s a great team effort. Just ’cause they aren’t showing up doesn’t mean they aren’t contributing. Defensive effort and rebounds are just as huge as points. Everyone top to bottom did a great job. It’s nice when you can get everybody in. They did a nice job of getting Trenton the ball and finishing. Nick (Javurek) has a motor and doesn’t quit. Joey stein, on the defensive side, had a nice game.”

Bark River hosts Rapid River Friday.

N. Dickinson at Superior Central

EBEN — Parker Maki scored 23 points to lift Superior Central over North Dickinson 37-34 in the Nordics’ boys basketball season opener Wednesday.

“Our defense was pretty constant the whole game, but our shot quality picked up a bit (in the second quarter),” Cougars coach Adam Ely said. “We trust our system, and that, in the end, it’s going to work out.”

North Dickinson coach Chris Mattson said it looked like “a first game” for the Nordics on offense.

“Defensively we played very well,” he said. “Rebounded well, too.”

Warren Gustafson led the Nordics with 11 points and Tucker Mattson scored eight. Brennan Donaldson contributed seven points and nine boards and Max Mattson scored seven.

The Nordics “had a decent look” for a game-tying shot in the final seconds, but it didn’t fall, coach Mattson said.

Kyle Frusti chipped in 10 points for the Cougars.

Girls

Escanaba at Marquette

MARQUETTE — The Escanaba Eskymos girl’s basketball team took home a win in their season opener 47-38 over Marquette in Marquette.

“We played very good defense tonight,” said Escanaba coach Mike Beveridge. “We forced them into a lot of turnovers and kept them down to 38 points.

“The girls played real hard, which led to a lot of fastbreak opportunities. Our offense struggled a bit at times. It was a difficult first game, we missed some lay ups and shots, and struggled at free throw line which surprised me. The offense will come as long as the defense keep playing.”

Nicole Kamin led the Mo’s in scoring with 18 points, rebounds with 10 and blocks with five. Mari Bink and Carney Salo also put up double digits in scoring with 14 each.

Escanaba plays Menominee at home Friday night.

Carney-Nadeau at Norway

NORWAY — The Carney-Nadeau girls basketball team found a foothold and kept pushing Wednesday in Norway where the Wolves earned a 57-20 victory over the Knights.

“I thought we played good defensive game. I thought we moved ball around pretty well,” said Wolves coach Ken Linder. “We had a pretty balanced attack all the way around.”

Tessa Wagner had a great night for the Wolves, earning a triple-double.

“She (Wagner) had an outstanding game,” said Linder. “Defensively, she just controls the lane.”

For Norway, there is still a little rust to knock off according to coach Joe Tinti.

“It was obvious it was the first time ever got on the floor in a long time,” said Norway coach Joe Tinti. “(Tessa) Wagner started early and had easily a dozen or more blocks on our higher percentage shots.

“We tried to kick the ball out to get some good jumpers but Carney’s length recovered quickly. We have three games in four days so we learn and move on.”

Carney plays at Rapid River tonight.
