Emeralds fall to Charlevoix

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique Emeralds’ season came to an end Tuesday night as the Charlevoix Raiders defeated the team 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) in a Division 3 regional semifinal match in Manistique.

“The girls did an awesome job, a very strong performance,” said Charlevoix coach Audra Randall. “We really had to play our best game. We knew that Manistique has had a great program.”

A short run led by libero Patria Muriel sealed the match for the Raiders in the third set. The set began with the Raiders and Emeralds trading blows until the score was tied at 16.

Manistique was first to score in the set, which was followed up by a short run led by Kayla Muth to bring their total to five.

Charlevoix struck back with a five-point run helmed by Claire Scholten after a Grace Lentz kill. Lentz’s kill was just one of many plays that caught her coach’s attention.

“Grace was phenomenal,” said Randall. “She played a super game blocking and hitting.”

A pair of brief runs gave the Emeralds their first lead of the night. The lead grew no more than three points, however, as the Raiders evened things up during another five-point run led by Scholten.

Despite losing the lead momentarily in the set, Randall said her team was never rattled.

“My team, all year long, has not really gotten shaken by things like that,” she said. “My girls play with a calm composure out on the court, and they trust each other.”

Charlevoix will be back in Manistique to play Calumet tonight.

Ella Scheutter (seven kills, two blocks) and Kayla Muth (fine kills, one block) put in a strong effort up front for the Emeralds. Leading the team in assists was Emma jones with 18. Madison Zellar, who notched Manistique’s only ace of the night, and Brooke Richey led the way in the dig category with 17 and 10, respectively.

No matter where the Emeralds put the ball, it seemed, the Raiders had an answer.

“They’re a tough attacking team,” said Emeralds’ coach Amy Nixon. “They kept their offense coming, and they made it difficult for us to transition.”

Though the season ended with a loss, Nixon was pleased with her team’s season.

“With all the adversity, changes and everything happening, the girls really worked hard and deserved to get to this point,” Nixon said. “Our girls never give up and will never leave anything unsaid or undone. I’m really proud of their efforts.”

Nixon continued to thank her seniors for their leadership throughout the season.

“With such a young team, if they (seniors) weren’t as welcoming and as positive as they are we would not have the team chemistry we have,” she said. “I really thank them for the kind of environment they brought to the team.”

The experience of tournament play is something, Nixon said, the young team will use to build toward the future.

“With two freshman and three sophomores on the floor tonight, they got a taste of what regional semifinals feels like,” she said. “Now they know what level of play it takes to get on to the next level.

“I think that will only motivate them to continue working on their skills and get here again next year.”
