Whitmer wins Off the Vine

BARK RIVER — Gary Whitmer has won many area road races throughout his running career.

The Gladstone resident added to his lengthy list of victories here Sunday, earning top honors in the Off the Vine five-kilometer run.

Whitmer covered the hilly 3.1-mile road and trail course in 19 minutes, 58.2 seconds and was followed by Allan Barribeau of Kingsford (21:12.2), James LeGault of Gladstone (22:23.2), Jesse Cretens of Bark River (22:56.2) and Nick Kasbohm of Carney (22:56.6).

“The last mile was hard,” said Whitmer, who ran a 6:10 split in the first mile. “I started out pretty good but started overheating in the last mile. I shouldn’t have run the whole course in warm-ups. I probably should have done about two miles. It’s a tough course.”

Katie Mendina of Norway took the women’s title at 24:44.3, edging Jamie Warren of Iron Mountain by .3 seconds.

They were followed by Natalie Randall of Escanaba (25:52.1), defending champion Hannassa Wicks of Powers (26:20.7) and Carla Bundgaard of Rapid River (27:02).

Kevin Holmes of Escanaba took the one-mile run in 8:44.6.

Sierra Nestle was the fastest 5-K walker at 21:34.1, followed by the lone men’s entrant Sam Kohnert of Gladstone (21:37.4), Danielle Labonte (21:43.1), nine-year-old Camille Richer of Gladstone (34:32.7), Lindsey Reynolds of Gladstone (41:25.2) and Kortney Jorasz of Escanaba (44:59.8).

Lisa Jenkins of Escanaba was the first walker to finish the mile at 20:41.4, slightly less than three seconds ahead of Bonnie Larson of Bark River.

The event drew 51 runners and walkers on this sunny and warm day.
