Mountaineers climb over Bark River, 42-6

Matt McCarthy | Iron Mountain Daily News Bark River-Harris quarterback Nick Javurek (9) scrambles down the field. Iron Mountain’s Preston Roberts (63) draws near Javurek Friday night at Mountaineer Stadium in Iron Mountain.

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain running back Caleb Evosevich-Hynes scored four touchdowns and rushed for 174 yards, as the Mountaineers cruised past Bark River-Harris Friday night. The Broncos dropped the West PAC Conference crossover game 42-6 at Mountaineer Stadium.

“Evosevich-Hynes, he’s so shifty and explosive at the same time. We want to get the ball in his hands for his playmaking ability,” said Mountaineer head coach Robin Marttila. “Caleb is an excellent football player.”

Evosevich-Hynes also had 52 receiving yards and kicked six extra points.

Iron Mountain amassed 405 total yards, with 194 being through the air. Senior quarterback Eli Lofholm played with poise and confidence, as the Mountaineer offensive line gave him plenty of time to survey the field.

Lofholm was 8-15, with two TD passes. One to Bryce Pietrantonio and the other to Joey Dumais. “Eli made great decisions tonight. He was making the right reads. He put in a lot of time in the offseason, and it showed,” Marttila said.

Marttila also praised Pietrantonio’s passing game and for being hard to take down in open space. “We were balanced on offense tonight, and up front, our line did a great job,” said Marttila.

Bark River, who falls to (0-2) on the season, totaled 149 combined yards in the game, with 93 rushing and 56 passing. Trevor Lippens scored the Broncos lone touchdown on a two-yard run with 37 seconds remaining in the game.

“Our kids are smart and play well as a team, but Iron Mountain is a great team. They’re in a class by themselves right now in our conference,” said Broncos head coach Al Stenberg. “We started off okay and forced them to punt on their first series, but then we fell apart.”

“No. 34 (Evosevich-Hynes) and No. 25 (Pietrantonio) for Iron Mountain, guys like that are hard to handle. 34 gets to the edge. He’s hard to catch up to and bring down,” Stenberg added.

Defensively, Iron Mountain was led by Evosevich-Hynes with six tackles, Pietrantonio with five tackles and an interception. Dominic Schinderle also had an interception for IM.

Iron Mountain (1-0) may not have an opponent the next two weeks, as its next two games are against teams from Houghton County, Calumet and at Hancock. On Thursday, the western U.P. shut down all Houghton County schools for two weeks due to COVID-19 positive cases.

Bark River has their home opener scheduled for Friday night versus Norway.
