ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos were unable to climb out of a two-set hole here Tuesday night as they dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 25-16) volleyball decision to the Kingsford Flivvers.

A six-point service run by senior Grace Charles helped the Eskymos build an 8-1 lead in the third set.

Junior Bailey Barron, who gave Esky its seven-point cushion on back-to-back kills, added a four-point service run as the Eskymos extended their lead to 13-2.

“We finally found some momentum in the third set,” said Esky coach Adam Lambert. “I thought that would tilt the scales in our favor, but Kingsford came ready to play.”

Esky led 15-5 following a kill by sophomore Carney Salo.

Kingsford then outscored the Eskymos 12-4, climbing within 19-17 when Christy Glodowski tipped the ball for a kill.

“We have to give credit in the third set,” said Kingsford coach Jaclynn Kreider. “Only, it felt like we kind of relaxed after taking the first two sets. After the third set we told the kids to go into the fourth with the midset it’s 0-0. We didn’t want them to think about the cushion we had. It was a great night of defense for us. They have two super middle hitters. We didn’t want them to get good passes to their middles.”

Following a sideout, Barron served for an ace and the Flivvers committed a pair of errors, enabling the Eskymos to gain an insurmountable 23-17 advantage.

A pair of service aces, a kill by Abby Terrian and an Esky hitting error enabled the Flivvers to take a 5-1 lead in the fourth.

The Eskymos pulled within 15-14, but managed just two points through the remainder of the finale.

“The Glodowski girl had a whale of a match for them,” said Lambert. “I don’t want to take anything away from them, but we gave them too many points.”

Terrian’s kill on a pass from setter Katherine Erickson gave Kingsford an 8-2 cushion in the opener.

The Eskymos climbed within 18-17 on a kill by sophomore Mari Bink but were unable to gain the upper hand.

In the second set, a six-point service run by Glodowski helped the Flivvers take a 9-2 advantage.

The score was tied at 19 following a kill by senior middle hitter Nicole Kamin.

Kingsford then got a sideout and Glodowski’s block on Kamin put the Flivvers ahead to stay.

“Christy started a little slow tonight, but once she settled in, it seemed like she was able to play more controlled,” said Kreider. “Kamin is a super athlete. She can hang in the air for a long time.”

Glodowski finished with nine kills and Terrian added seven. Erickson collected 19 assists. Emma Andrews was Kingsford’s defensive leader with 26 digs and Grace Roberts had 14 and Talia Wallis added 12.

Kamin paced the Eskymos with 13 kills, five blocks and seven digs. Bink finished with 10 kills. Sophomore Katelyn Stalboerger added six kills and two blocks. Charles tallied 14 assists. Barron had 27 digs and senior Anna Smith had 16.

The Eskymos, who won the jayvee match (25-23, 12-25, 25-18), visit Gladstone Thursday. The Flivvers host Norway Thursday.
