ESCANABA — The Escanaba girls’ tennis team pulled off a clean win here Wednesday, sweeping doubles and only dropping two singles matches to defeat the Munising Mustangs 6-2.

The Eskymos ran the table in doubles, with Erica Moore and Madi Mishica taking Munising’s Skylar Campbell and Maci Cornish (6-1, 6-4) at No. 1.

Esky’s Gracie Wickham and Abby Hill took No. 2 in two sets as well, but the Mustangs’ Lori Mattson and Payton Coty didn’t make it easy. After being shut out by the Esky duo in the first set (6-0), Mattson and Coty found their footing and forced a tie-break to end the second set.

However, Hill and Wickham prevailed 7-6 (7-2).

“Good all-around tennis today,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “All of our doubles teams were able to get good two set wins today. It was an especially great performance from Abby Hill and Gracie Wickham today to hold off their opponents in a very close second set.”

At No. 3, Esky’s Delaney McIntyre and Leslie Purcell defeated Madeline Cole and Elizabeth Holloway (6-1, 6-0).

No. 4 wrapped up doubles for the Eskymos as Anna Valiquette and Lily Newhouse finished off the Mustang’s Valerie Johnson and Athina Johnson, (6-2, 6-1).

Munising’s wins came at No.2 and No. 3 singles as Mackenzie Richardson defeated Esky’s Amanda Beem (6-1, 6-0) for the No.2 victory, and Jenna Matson curbed the Eskymos’ McKenna Bullen in the second set to win (6-2, 6-4).

“This is our second (match of the season), so we still had a little bit of the jitters in the beginning,” Mustangs’ coach Jennifer Cornish said. “It took the girls quite a bit to get out of that, but by the end of the matches today, they were really pulling it out.

“The girls were putting their all out there, and there was a lot of hustle. They all hung in there.

As a whole, I think the girls did well. They all did really well. It was a good day for some tennis.”

At No. 1 singles, Sophia Derkos took Munising’s Logan Peters in two sets (6-1, 6-2), and the Eskymos’ Lizzy Sliva finished off the Mustangs’ Emily Miles in a tough second set, (6-2, 7-5).

“Lizzy Sliva and Lily Newhouse both got into their first varsity matches today, and they were both able to get wins,” Ogren said. “Both teams played well, but it was nice to come out with a win.”

Escanaba hosts Norway Tuesday. Munising visits Marquette Wednesday.
