Cougars pounce on MP

EBEN — The Superior Central Cougars recorded 40 kills here Thursday night in a 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23) volleyball triumph over the Mid Peninsula Wolverines.

Riley Johnson led the Cougars with 16 kills and a block. Riley Moore added nine kills and a block.

“Eight girls got kills tonight,” said Cougars’ coach Kris Bray. “We were hitting pretty well and Riley (Johnson) did real well at the net. We needed a win. We had been doing a lot of good things. We just weren’t getting over that hump. They had some good servers and we let them back in the match. We were setting the ball up and hitting in the fourth set. We were pretty far ahead, then they crept back in it.”

Superior Central’s Katrina Augustyn hit 11 service points, including four aces. Moore had nine points and two aces and Johnson had eight points and two aces. Charlotte Charlebois recorded 18 assists and DIane Augustyn had 13 in the non-conference match.

Landry Koski paced the Wolverines with 10 kills, six blocks and seven aces. Allyson Lancour added six kills and four blocks. Daisy Englund had 13 assists and 14 digs and Cora Prater tallied 10 digs.

“This was one of those losses that was very frustrating,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “We came out real strong in the third set, but we did some simple things wrong. Superior Central has some hard hitters and we had some serve receive errors. We also lacked communication.”

The Cougars, who also won the jayvee match (25-9, 25-22), host Carney-Nadeau Tuesday. The Wolverines visit the Wolves Thursday.
