Norse softball sweeps Skippers
TITUSVILLE, Fla. — The Bay College softball team moved above .500 for the first time this year here Wednesday, sweeping past St. Clair County Community College 10-7 and 12-3 in five innings.
Lexi Chaillier belted a leadoff home run and Richelle Vandeville added a two-run shot, giving the Norse a 3-0 lead after the first inning of the opener.
The Norse (6-5) added six runs in the second. Madison Griffin clubbed a three-run double, then scored on an error. Chaillier drove in another run on a single to center and Kaitlyn Hardwick’s double raised the count to 9-0.
St. Clair (1-5) responded with four runs in the fourth and a pair of the fifth, trimming its deficit to 9-6.
Hardwick then gave the Norse an insurmountable four-run cushion on an error in the sixth.
Eden Oswald, Hardwick and Griffin collected three hits each.
Oswald, who pitched the entire contest, took the win. She struck out three, walked two and allowed seven hits.
In the nightcap, the Skippers scored a run in the first and two in the third for a 3-0 lead.
Bay responded with six runs in its half of the third, trimming its deficit to one on a two-run homer by Chaillier for her seventh this year.
Taylor Hunter poked a two-run single and Hardwick added a two-run shot for a 6-3 lead.
The first seven Norse hitters reached base in the fifth, including Brittany Schwartz, who clubbed a leadoff homer. They drove in six runs in the inning for their fifth straight victory.
Chaillier and Hardwick collected three hits apiece. Schwartz took the win in the circle, striking out two, walking one and giving up seven hits through five frames.
The Norse resume in a twinbill today at 2 against Spoon River Community College.
