Norse baseball snaps five-game losing skid
VERO BEACH, Fla. — A big sixth inning helped the Bay College Norse snap a five-game losing streak in a 17-5 baseball victory over Nyack (N.Y.) College here Wednesday.
The Norse (3-6) collected six hits and took advantage of three walks and two hit batsmen in the decisive outburst.
Back-to-back, two-out doubles by Tanner Halvorson and Kyler Moir got things going for the Norse in the opening frame. Richard Wayka and Jeff Allen added RBI singles as they built a 4-0 lead.
Nyack (0-6) scored twice in the second, but Bay’s Dane VanDenHeuvel blasted an RBI triple and scored on a single by Allen for a 6-2 cushion in the third.
Allen finished with three hits and five RBIs. VanDenHeuvel added two hits and scored four runs. David Ibn Ezra and Wayka finished with two hits each and an RBI.
Winning pitcher Scott Adams struck out seven, walked three and allowed six hits through six innings.
The victory enabled the Norse to bounce back from a 16-6 loss in five innings to the College of Lake County (Ill.) in Wednesday’s opener.
Jake Harmon belted a home run and drove in six runs for Lake County (5-1).
The Norse, fueled by Ben Snyder’s two-run double, came back from a four-run deficit by scoring six times in the first, but couldn’t stop Lake County’s offense.
Bay starter Nicolas Goeber lasted just 2 1/3 innings, giving up 10 runs on nine hits and five walks.
Lucas Weinert and Ibn Ezra had two hits apiece for the Norse, who face Ancilla College today at 1 and Hagerstown (Md.) Community College at 4.
