DeMars’ career-high lifts Rockets past Stephenson

STEPHENSON — Tony DeMars scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Tyler Sundling added 15 points and five assists, and the Rapid River Rockets held off Stephenson for a 61-54 road win Tuesday night in a Skyline Central Conference boys basketball matchup.

The Rockets, who led 36-27 at halftime before holding on in the second half, had to overcome a 26-point performance by Bryce Kuehnau.

“Great game on the road tonight,” Rockets coach Mitch Hall said. “Tony had a big game, Ty had another solid game with big defensive responsibility. (Braydon) Moss only had two points but had a great floor game and we leaned on him big late in the game to handle pressure. We pressed a little and give them a few fits.”

Griffin Flath chipped in eight boards for the Rockets (13-6, 12-5 SC), who held a commanding 30-12 rebounding advantage. Trae Larson had 10 points for the Eagles (2-15, 2-11 SC).

“I thought Vincent Micheau had a great night off the bench as well,” Hall said. “Their small guard (Kuehnau) was really tough. He had good penetration and a great pull-up jumper. I’m happy with our performance. I think a big part was our ball movement.”

The Rockets visit Norway Thursday.
