POWERS — It took a half, but after exiting the locker room, a refueled North Central Jets boys basketball team broke a 24-24 halftime tie and overcame a 29-point game from Cameron Schultz to post a 55-43 Skyline Central Conference victory over North Dickinson Tuesday in Powers.

Just under two minutes into the second half, Luke Gorzinski hit back-to-back layups to start a 10-0 Jets’ run to make it 36-26 with 2:54 left in the third.

“We made a little bit of an adjustment at halftime, but we stuck to our principles and our fundamentals,” Jets coach Mike Malone said. “I think our guys putting pressure on them tonight and creating turnovers helped us create a little bit of a lead, and then once we had that lead, we did a pretty decent job of sustaining. There were some runs, but I think we did a decent job overall.”

Schultz answered back with a 3-point play, but the fifth-ranked Jets (11-4, 11-3 SCC) went on a 6-2 run in the next minute and a half to increase their lead to 42-31.

“I want to credit Cameron Schultz. He had a huge night for us, and I believe, made all 13 of his free throws,” Nordics coach Chris Mattson said. “Their ability to rebound the basketball probably won the game for them. I don’t think we had an offensive rebound in the first half. They had guys crashing the boards and did a wonderful job.”

Schultz added two points from the free throw line and a last-second breakaway layup to reduce the Nordics’ deficit to 42-35 as the third ended.

The Jets went on another 6-2 run to start the fourth quarter and limited North Dickinson (5-10, 5-9 SCC) to just eight points in the final quarter.

“My kids played with a lot of energy and a lot of passion,” Mattson said. “Defensively, we were getting to their shooters. We just gutted it out against a very good team. North Central likes to play tempo and put pressure on you.

“I liked our effort. I think were in the game until that three-minute mark. It was very similar to the first game we played against them (67-53 loss Jan. 13).”

Gorzinski led the Jets with 16 points, and Noah Gorzinski followed with 14. Brien Gronmark chipped in 10.

Malone had high praise for Schultz.

“Cameron was hitting the gap on us so fast,” Malone said. “He goes in head down, and we weren’t closing the gap fast enough. We got five or six fouls on that alone, and that can’t happen. We have to close that gap quicker.

“This is the best offensive rebounding game we’ve ever had. They boxed out well, too. I was really proud of (our) rebounding tonight.”

North Central hosts Norway Friday, while North Dickinson hosts Carney-Nadeau.
