IM girls get second win against Emeralds

IRON MOUNTAIN — Two underclassmen led the way in scoring for Iron Mountain Monday night. Behind 15 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Annslee Runsat, and 13 points and eight rebounds from freshman Ellison Powell, the Mountaineers recorded their second win of the season as they defeated Manistique 45-29 in Mid-Peninsula Conference action.

“We had a really great night as a team tonight,” said Iron Mountain head coach Katelynn Grenier. “I thought we got off to a strong start, which helped us keep control of the game. It was a great team win and everyone contributed in some way.”

Tori Sorensen added eight points for the Mountaineers, while grabbing a team-high 13 rebounds.

Manistique was led in scoring by Emilee McDaniel with 11 points.

“We attacked the basket and shot well from the free throw line. Ellison Powell shot the ball well for us tonight. She got us going in the first quarter,” Grenier said. “Hopefully this win gives us some momentum going into the final weeks of the season, especially for Friday night.”

Iron Mountain, which improves to 2-15 on the season with the win, travels across Woodward Avenue Friday night to face Twin City rival Kingsford in non-conference action. The Mountaineers also won the JV game, 54-38.

The Emeralds, who slipped to 6-13 on the season, are off until Feb. 25 when they travel to Ishpeming for their final regular season game of the season.
