Hannahville splits with Ojibwe Charter

HANNAHVILLE — The Hannahville boys survived a cold-shooting fourth quarter here Saturday morning as they hung on for a 60-58 basketball triumph over Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter.

Hannahville took a 52-40 advantage on a buzzer-beating 20-foot jump shot by sophomore Xander Spry at the end of the third stanza in this Northern Lights League match-up.

The Soaring Eagles then couldn’t seem to buy a bucket much of the fourth as their lead melted to 58-56 on a lay-in by Allan Wendling with less than two minutes left in the contest.

Sophomore Joe Larson scored from under the basket to put Hannahville up 60-56 at 1:05.

The Eagles ended the scoring on a 15-foot floater by Marquis Harmon with 17 seconds remaining.

“Our defense bailed us out,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “I’m super proud of the whole team. That’s a tough basketball team. We were getting into the (passing) lanes in the first half, but they moved their feet well and got into the lanes in the second half.”

Hannahville took its biggest lead at 37-21 on a seven-foot set shot by Eli Meshigaud with 63 seconds left in the second quarter.

Sophomore Gage Sagataw led Hannahville (13-3) with 23 points, while Larson added 10. Harmon scored 22. Rosello hit 14 and Wendling had 10 for Ojibwe, which had 15 miscues.

The teams combined for 29 turnovers, including 15 by Ojibwe.

“We have two real good point guards,” said Ojibwe coach Arlen Kuzmik. “We knew we had to stop their fast break. We had to keep getting back on defense.”

The Hannahville girls fell to the Eagles 52-24.

Hannahville trailed 16-3 early in the second quarter before going on an 8-0 run and pulling within 16-11 on a 20-foot set shot by Estelle Pas midway through the frame.

The Soaring Eagles were unable to get any closer, however, as Ojibwe went on a 10-2 run and gained a 26-13 cushion on a putback by Ashlynn Turner 11 seconds before the half.

Amea Miller scored 18 points. Turner hit 14 and Kayley Annand had 11 for the Eagles.

Desirae Lattergrass paced Hannahville with 11.

Both teams committed 25 turnovers.
