Hannahville splits with Mackinac Island
HANNAHVILLE — The Hannahville boys dictated the pace here Saturday morning as they rolled past the Mackinac Island Lakers 69-22 in a Northern Lights League basketball game.
Hannahville, displaying its normal uptempo offense, sank 15 3-point shots while improving to 10-3 overall and in the league.
Five Soaring Eagles’ players hit shots from beyond the arc, including sophomore Gage Sagataw who drained seven triples for 21 points.
“Our strength is running the floor,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “We try to launch as many 3s (as we can) and get offensive rebounds. Mackinac Island has a young team, but they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.”
The Soaring Eagles raced to a 22-6 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 34-9 on a 22-foot jump shot from the left wing by Sagataw shortly before halftime.
Junior Mason Thunder, who did most of his scoring in the paint, added 10 points and classmate Joe Larson had nine on three trifectas.
“Coach wanted us to split things just a little today,” said Larson. “He wanted us to work the ball inside and continue shooting the 3s. We did pretty good on the offensive end.”
Derby Kramer scored seven points for the Lakers (3-13), who committed 25 turnovers. Hannahville had just six miscues.
Sophomore Mable Styburski tied a school record with 39 points, leading the Mackinac Island girls to a 60-25 triumph.
Styburski now shares the record with Ella Cowell, who set the record a year ago.
Desirae Lattergrass scored 11 for the Soaring Eagles, still in search of their first victory this season. They had 24 turnovers and the Lakers finished with 19.
“We’re pretty young,” said Hannahville coach Josh Cronick. “We’re moving the ball around and communicating more. We made a promise not to give up on each other. We have to start somewhere.”
The Hannahville boys host Munising Baptist Tuesday. Both teams then host Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter for a pair of games this weekend.
