Fast start lifts Wolverines past Munising
MUNISING — The Mid Peninsula girls gained enough separation in the first half here Thursday night to post a 59-37 basketball triumph over the Munising Mustangs.
Mid Pen led 20-13 after the first quarter and 36-16 at halftime of the Skyline Central Conference contest.
“It was a battle,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell. “Megan Matson was having her way with us in the first quarter. She has improved over the past couple years and is heck of a ballplayer. We switched from a man-to-man to a zone in the second quarter and it was bit of a game-changer. The second quarter was big for us. It was a physical game and it’s a tough place to play, but the girls dug deep.”
Mid Pen’s Daisy Englund hit 6-of-10 field goals and scored 16 points to go with four steals. Kennedy Englund added 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Matson finished with 22 points.
“Kennedy got in foul trouble and wasn’t happy with her game, but she still played well,” said Croasdell. “She contributes in so many ways. Daisy had a great defensive game and shot the ball well. I would like to see her shoot a little more.”
The Wolverines held a 36-25 rebounding advantage, hit 24-of-59 field goals and committed 10 turnovers. The Mustangs were 14-of-43 from the field and had 22 miscues.
Mid Pen (10-4 overall, 6-4 SCC) hosts Superior Central Monday. Munising (5-11 overall, 4-4 league) travels to Forest Park Tuesday.
