Eskymos crise to victory in softball doubleheader

GLADSTONE — Escanaba’s bats got hotter than the weather here Thursday night as they romped past Gladstone 13-0 and 17-6 in a softball doubleheader.

The Eskymos unleashed a 17-hit attack in the nightcap which was decided in five innings. The opener went six frames on this sunny, breezy and seasonably-cool evening.

“We’re starting to hit the ball real well,” Esky coach Andy Fields said. “We have a lot of good hitters. We don’t have a lot of powers, but we brought our jayvee players which gives us some depth for the post-season.”

The second game was tied at five after the second frame before Esky exploded for eight runs in the third.

Esky, which cashed in on three fielding errors, took a 6-5 lead on senior Chloe Dubord’s single to centerfield and gained a two-run cushion on Addison Noblet’s infield single.

Sophomore Abby Derkos’ single to left brought in Esky’s eighth run and senior Harlee Coolman’s two-run single to left made it 10-5.

Breleigh Reinhart added a two-run single to left and senior Landry Bray’s single to left gave the Eskymos a 13-5 cushion.

After holding the Braves scoreless in their half of the third, Coolman blasted a grand slam homer to center for a 17-5 advantage in the fourth.

“It feels great,” Coolman said of the grand slam. “I honestly didn’t know the bases were loaded. We’re working together as a team and supporting each other.”

The Eskymos opened the scoring on Cam Buckley’s three-run homer to left in the first.

Addy Sanville’s two-run double to left got the Braves on the board in their half of the opening frame, then evened the score on sophomore Tiahna Reynold’s ground out to the pitcher.

Each team scored twice in second before the Eskymos broke the game open in the third.

“They’re a good offensive team,” Braves’ coach Scott Herioux said. “Addy has had a real good year and Lauren (Pare) has been struggling with her shoulder, but she’s a grinder. We’ve had a real good season. For the most part, we’ve competed with the teams in our district. It’s there for the taking. We just have to get our confidence back.”

Derkos collected three hits in each game and Coolman drove in six runs in the second game. Reinhart had three hits in the nightcap and Buckley added a pair.

Esky, taking advantage of two fielding miscues, sealed the verdict by scoring nine times in the sixth.

Cam Buckley pitched the first two innings before Landry Bray relieved her in the third.

“It actually felt pretty good,” Buckley said. “Coming off an injury, I thought I did pretty decent. Although, it could have been better.”

Bray fired a two-hitter and struck out 11 in the first game.

Esky led 2-0 after four frames prior to scoring a pair of runs in the fifth for a 4-0 cushion.

The Eskymos put the game out of reach in the sixth by scoring nine times

Dubord ripped a two-run double to right for a 6-0 advantage.

Buckley clubbed an RBI single to left for the Eskymos for a nine-run advantage.

The Eskymos then took advantage of two fielding miscues for an insurmountable 11-0 advantage.

Esky concludes its regular season by hosting Menominee in a twinbill Tuesday. Gladstone is idle until May 29 when it faces Manistique in a Division 3 district opener at Menominee.
