Esky takes 2nd at GNCs

NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba gymnastics team traveled to Negaunee Monday for the Great Northern Conference meet and came away with second place, scoring 122.375 points. Marquette was first with 128.375 and Negaunee was third with 112.

Esky’s Abbie Derouin and Lizzy Sliva finished second and third in all-around, respectively. Derouin’s score was 34.25, which tied her for second with Negaunee’s May Waters. Sliva’s score of 31.775 placed her squarely in third. Marquette’s Haddie Ketzenberger was first (35.6).

Derouin also finished first on vault (9.0), second on uneven bars (8.8) and fourth on balance beam (8.0).

Sliva was third on beam (8.025), third on vault (8.65) and fourth on bars (7.8).

“I’m so proud of this team and what they have accomplished so far this season,” Esky assistant head coach Brent Martin said. “As a coach, these girls make me smile when goals are achieved.

“This year is in the history books. As a team, we’re going to regionals for the first time.”

The Eskymos were without Caitlyn Davenport due to illness, but still got big contributions from the others.

“It was going to be tough, but these gymnasts are relentless and pulled together,” Martin said. “Maddy Block, Alexis Pieppo, Jasmine Clark and Sofia Slight were also big contributors tonight and for this season. Each girl has their part and we will use tonight as another chance to get better for our regional in March.

“Gymnastics is just like life — when you fall, you were taught to get back up. I’m proud to back up this team when they fall and rise. It’s definitely nice to be part of the rise in Escanaba!”
