Carney boys edged in overtime by Destiny

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves had it, then let it slip away in an 80-78 overtime loss to Destiny Saturday in boys basketball action in Wisconsin.

The Wolves (8-7) led by five with a little over a minute to play in regulation, then watched Destiny score five straight points to even the score and send the game into overtime.

The game was tied 78-78 late in the extra frame when the Wolves were called for a five-second violation while trying to throw an inbound pass. Destiny took advantage on its next possession, scoring the game-winner with two seconds left as the Wolves couldn’t get another shot off before time expired.

“I thought we played exceptionally well,” C-N coach Paul Polfus said. “They’re a very quick team and very athletic. We did a very good job playing with more energy than we did (Friday) night against Mid Pen (in a 51-47 loss). It was a good bounce back in terms of playing how we wanted to play and playing with energy. We wanted to play against a quick team and that style. For the most part, we handled their pressure pretty well. I’m pretty happy with the how kids played.”

Brett LaFord led the Wolves with 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Max Baumler added 20 points, while Beau Koffman chipped in 15 points and 11 boards. Mike Flanagan had seven points and seven assists for the Wolves, who shot 27 for 67 from the field, committed 15 turnovers and had 10 steals.

The Wolves host Norway Tuesday for their Cancer Awareness Night.
