NEGAUNEE — Sophomore Alyssa Hill made eight baskets on the way to a game-high 16-point night as Negaunee held off Gladstone 50-42 in a Mid-Peninsula Conference high school girls basketball game played at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium in Negaunee on Tuesday night.

The Miners (12-3) fell behind 13-9 after one quarter, but caught up and passed the Braves in the second quarter, taking a 23-19 lead at halftime.

Negaunee pulled further ahead after three quarters, 38-29, before being outscored by a single point in the final period.

Hill made a bucket in every quarter, scoring 10 of her points in the second half. She also had team highs of seven rebounds and four steals.

“After struggling a bit in the first quarter on the offensive end, we executed much better the last three quarters,” Miners head coach Mike O’Donnell said. “I also thought our defensive effort was pretty good. We got up full court and were able to turn them over in the back court at some key moments in both halves.

“Bree Giotto was the spearhead of that forcing many of those with excellent effort.”

Senior teammate Chloe Norman added 12 points, including going 4 for 4 at the free-throw line while dishing out a team-high three assists.

Miners sophomore Lilly Nelson had nine points, all on 3-pointers, and Giotto added eight points and six rebounds.

Taelor Ziese scored 12 points to lead Gladstone, getting 10 of them in the final quarter. Teammate Megan Crow added eight.
