11 area wrestlers qualify for individual regionals

ESCANABA — Eleven area wrestlers are headed for individual regional tournaments after placing in the top four of their respective weight divisions at individual districts Saturday.

Escanaba placed four in the Division 2 district at Gaylord, including Hunter Larson who won by injury default over Petoskey’s Rippin Vining in the 140-pound championship match.

Tyler Lawson (135) placed third and Collin Arnt (125) and Kahler Geyer (171) took fourth for the Eskymos, who face Gaylord in a team regional opener Wednesday at Clio.

Gladstone qualified seven in a D-3 district at Grayling.

Michael Brazeau was crowned champion at 103 after pinning Grayling’s Joe Armstrong in 67 seconds.

Hunter Solis (119) and Cole Hansen (152) were runners-up, with Solis dropping a 13-6 decision to Kingsley’s Tanner Martindale and Hansen bowing to Grayling’s Max Halstead 10-6.

Lane Matzke (112) and Brett Boudreau (285) took third and Cole Potier (160) and Peter Noblet (215) were fourth for the Braves, who meet Grayling in their team regional opener at Kingsley Wednesday.

The Eskymos return to Gaylord and the Braves head to Boyne City for individual regionals this coming Saturday.
