Norway race season kicks off May 16

NORWAY — A car show and practice session free to race fans on Saturday, May 16 will officially kick off the 2020 racing season at Norway Speedway’s third-mile, paved oval.

Teams that compete in Norway’s weekly Friday night program will showcase their machines on the frontstretch beginning at 11 a.m. and running until 3 p.m. CDT. Teams can begin entering the pit area at 10. An open practice session will follow. The event is free to the public.

Trophies will be awarded in the respective divisions for best appearing cars. Coca Cola late models, Auto Value super stocks, 141 Auto Sales stock cars, MC Signs and Graphics 4 bangers will battle weekly, while Ken’s Sports sport trucks will compete on a roughly every-other-week basis.

The return of the popular sportmod “Pavement Pounder” event will take place Friday, July 31 with a raindate of Aug. 14 if needed. Last year’s event was won by Bark River’s Mike Richer.

The 37th annual “Stateline Challenge” presented by Island Resort and Casino and Aurora Liquors is slated for Friday, July 3. Last year’s event was captured by Prairie Du Sac’s Travis Sauter.

Track announcer and motorsports author Joe Verdegan will also host a book signing in the infield during the car show for his newly released book “Racing In The 906”, which features several decades of stock car racing history in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

An earlier practice session will also take place May 9 beginning at 10 p.m. All divisions are welcome at the open practice sessions.

A complete season schedule is expected to be released in the very near future.
