Bay baseball ends regular season with sweep of CCC

WELLS — The Bay College Norse ended their baseball season with a bang as they completed a four-game weekend sweep of Detroit Community Christian College here Sunday.

Bay exploded for 11 runs in the sixth inning in a 14-4 triumph over their visitors from the Motor City in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

The Norse won Saturday’s opener 7-2 and needed just five innings to take the nightcap 10-0, then followed up with a 5-3 victory in Sunday’s opener.

This weekend’s success enabled the Norse to finish with a winning record for the first time in the program’s history at 24-18.

Community Christian, comprised entirely of freshmen, ended its inaugural season at 8-25.

“Eleven runs in an inning doesn’t happen very often,” Bay head coach Mike Pankow said. “We were getting good at-bats. We’re mentally tougher than we were the past few years. We were able to take some lumps and fight through it. We had more mature at-bats and adjusted to situations well.”

Sophomore Zac Gomersall added the finishing touches to Bay’s 10th consecutive victory with a two-run double to rightfield, scoring freshman Zach Gibson and sophomore Jace Cota.

“Everybody was hitting the ball well and wanted to keep the train moving,” Gomersall said. “We had our fastest guy (Gibson) on second. Once the ball reached the outfield, I knew he was going to score. We thought we would just come out here and simply win two games, but they made us work for those. They’re definitely going to be a good team when they grow and develop. This was as much a storybook ending as you could have. I have high hopes for the guys next year. Our coaches are doing a great job developing the players.”

The Norse, who sent 14 hitters to the plate in the sixth, were trailing 4-3 after 5½ frames.

Bay took a 5-4 lead on Gomersall’s two-run double to left and gained a 7-4 cushion on Josh Blake’s two-run homer to left.

Sophomore Chase Carlson extended Bay’s cushion to four runs on an error before Jake Sager’s two-run single to left-center made it 10-4.

Melchor Feliciano followed with a two-run double, extending Bay’s advantage to 12-4 and setting the stage for Gomersall’s season-ending double.

The Lions scored twice in the opening frame before the Norse sliced their deficit in half on Sager’s single to left in the second.

Bay tied the score on Cota’s leadoff homer to left in the third before Community Christian scored a pair of runs for a 4-2 lead in the fourth.

Escanaba graduate Scott Hiller then brought the Norse within 4-3 on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.

“The strike zone disappeared on us in the sixth inning,” Lions’ coach Pete Finn said. “You can’t operate that way. Plus, you’ve got to make plays when the ball is hit to you. This has been a tremendous learning experience. We’ve been road warriors this season. We were on the road for about 75 percent of our games.”

Cota led the Norse with three hits and two RBis. Gomersall and Cota added two hits and drove in three runs apiece and sophomore Brandon Watts stole two bases.

Iron Mountain graduate Blake Julian, who pitched the final two innings, took the win. Starter Keenan Campbell struck out one, walked two and gave up four runs on six hits through four frames.

A four-run second inning helped the Norse overcome five errors in Sunday’s opener.

Freshman Austin Samaanske finished 3-for-3 for Bay, which led 4-1 after two.

Hunter Ballantyne, who worked four innings for the victory, struck out five, walked one and allowed two runs on three hits.

Gladstone grad Tyler Darmogray provided the Norse with three solid innings of relief. He fanned one, walked two and gave up a run and a hit.

“I think our team was closer than in the past,” Ballantyne said. “I don’t think our hitting was as good early in the season, but we gained confidence as the season progressed. The sixth inning in our last game was one of the craziest I’ve ever seen. Overall, this team was one big family.”

Bay collected 11 hits in Saturday’s opener.

Freshman Charlson Croes led the way by going 3-for-3. Gibson ripped two home runs and drove in five. Darmogray also had two hits.

Winning pitcher Thijs Rijstra worked the entire contest, striking out five and walking two.

Darmogray and freshman Logan Peterson each recorded two stolen bases.

Cota and Blake rapped two-run homers in Saturday’s second game. Cota finished with three hits and Gomersall and Sagar had two each.

Sager rapped a three-run double. Gomersall added a two-run double and Hiller clubbed a triple. Watts had two stolen bases.
