LaFord, Wolves hang on to upend DeTour
CARNEY — Brett LaFord scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Carney-Nadeau boys started fast and then hung on to upend DeTour 66-58 in a non-conference basketball game Saturday in Carney.
The Wolves (4-2) led 15-5 at the end of the first quarter and 35-20 at halftime before DeTour roared all the way back to take a two-point lead with just two minutes to go. Carney then finished the game on a 10-0 run to secure the victory.
“We got out to a quick start and were up by 20 at one point in the second quarter,” Wolves’ coach Paul Polfus said. “Then we just couldn’t make any shots after that. They just chipped away and chipped away, and it seemed like we were stuck on 41 forever. We didn’t score for like seven minutes.”
The Wolves relied heavily on LaFord, who hit 11 of 18 shots from the field. Freshman Brayden Kakuk also had a career-high with 12 points.
“Brett held us in there, driving and attacking the basket,” Polfus said. “One thing that’s been hurting us is free throw shooting, and we were only 15 for 28.
“Defensively, I thought we did a great job. DeTour played hard, so give them credit, too.”
Grant Fountain led DeTour with 19 points, while Josh Newell added 14.
Carney shot 23 for 65 from the field, while DeTour was 22 for 51. C-N won the battle on the boards 29-22, but shot just 5 for 33 from 3-point range.
C-N, which won the jayvee game 55-35, visits Rapid River tonight at 7:30 in a makeup game.
