Tech falls on road

DETROIT — A bad second quarter was the difference for the Michigan Tech University football team in a 35-14 GLIAC loss to Wayne State University here Saturday.

After the game was tied 7-7 after the first quarter, Wayne State put up 21 points in the second to lead 28-7 at halftime.

Tech (4-5) pulled within 28-14 on William Marano’s second touchdown of the game from five yards out with 3:26 left to play, but the Warriors (7-3) forced a Tech turnover in the end zone to put the game away with just under two minutes left.

Tech quarterback Steele Fortress completed 25 of 44 passes for 283 yards and one touchdown. Marano ran for 76 yards and a score on seven carries, while also catching two passes for 25 yards and a TD. Jacob Wenzlick caught six passes for 96 yards.

Braxton Blackwell and Travis Tidwell each tallied seven tackles.

The Huskies host Northwood University in their season finale Saturday.

NMU routed by foe

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University football team saw its losing streak reach eight games here Saturday in a 56-10 GLIAC loss to Saginaw Valley State on Senior Day.

Saginaw Valley (5-5) jumped on the Wildcats from the opening kickoff, building a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

NMU (1-8) got on the board in the second quarter on a 50-yard field goal by Daniel Riser to make it 21-3. After SVSU went up 28-3, the Wildcats scored their lone touchdown on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Johnson to Benjamin Loutsis.

Keshawn Howard led the Wildcats with 116 yards rushing, while Loutsis caught three passes for 71 yards. Brady Hanson led the defense with 14 tackles, while Antonio Howard Jr. recorded five tackles and an interception.

NMU finishes its season at Ashland University Saturday.

NMU icers tie, fall

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University hockey team tied with St. Cloud State 3-3 Friday night before falling to the Huskies 5-4 in overtime Saturday.

Trailing 3-0, the Wildcats scored three goals within three minutes in the third period Friday to force a 3-3 tie after neither team scored during a five-minute overtime period.

Vincent de Mey scored the first Wildcat goal and Andre Ghantous added the next two. John Hawthorne finished with 21 saves.

The Wildcats (6-3-2) then fell in another 3-0 hole after the first period Saturday. After each team scored in the second, the Wildcats once more scored three goals within three minutes to tie the game 4-4 with just under nine minutes remaining.

However, St. Cloud State’s Nick Perbix scored 3:53 into overtime to give the Huskies (3-2-4) the victory.

Ghantous, Luke Voltin, Griffin Loughran and Ty Readman each scored for the Wildcats. Hawthorne made 24 saves.

NMU hosts Alaska in WCHA action this weekend.

NMU women split

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team got its season started with a 60-33 triumph over William Jewell College here Saturday.

Jessica Schultz led the Wildcats with 12 points.

The Wildcats then fell to Lewis University 65-41 Sunday. Lexi Smith led the way with 11 points.

NMU visits Minnesota State University Thursday.

Tech men sweep

LEBANON, Ill. — The Michigan Tech University men’s basketball team posted two wins at the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge here over the weekend.

The Huskies rallied for a 78-73 win over McKendree University Saturday after trailing 35-27 at the half.

Kyle Monroe led the Huskies with 29 points and nine boards. Tommy Lucca added 18 points, while Dawson Bilski of North Central High School added 14 points.

The Huskies then put together another strong second half to upend Lewis University 63-54 Sunday.

Monroe led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Bilski followed with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. Owen White added 13 points.

The Huskies visit Winona State University Sunday.

Tech women split

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Michigan Tech University women’s basketball team split a pair of season-opening games in the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge here over the weekend.

The Huskies started strong with a 73-63 triumph over Lewis University Saturday.

Cassidy Trotter led the Huskies with 19 points, seven steals and four rebounds. Abbie Botz added 15 points and Sloane Zenner chipped in 14.

Tech was then outscored 26-12 in the fourth quarter to drop Sunday’s decision 75-71 to William Jewell College.

Baillie McGirk led the Huskies with 15 points. Botz added 13, while Ellie Mackay scored 10 off the bench.

The Huskies visit St. Cloud State Friday.

Tech icers swept

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech University hockey team was swept by Minnesota State University in WCHA action here over the weekend.

The Huskies (3-5, 1-5) fell 2-1 Saturday and were shut out 3-0 Friday.

Seamus Donohue scored Tech’s lone goal at the 3:04 mark of the second period to tie Saturday’s contest, but Minnesota State’s Parker Tuomie responded at the 16:57 mark to give the Mavericks the victory.

Freshman goaltender Blake Pietila made his first collegiate start and stopped 18 shots for the Huskies.

The Mavericks (8-1, 5-1) scored two goals and one in the third in Friday’s shutout.

Robbie Beydoun stopped made 22 saves before being pulled just over a minute into the third period.

The Huskies visit Lake Superior State this weekend.

NMU men split

LEBANON, Ill. — The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team began its season by topping Lewis University 76-63 and then falling to McKendree University in the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge here over the weekend.

The Wildcats won Saturday’s contest over Lewis behind 53 second half points. Alec Fruin led NMU with 17 points and Dolapa Olayinka added 13. Marcus Matelski chipped in 12, Ben Wolf posted 11 and Sam Taylor had 10.

NMU was then routed by McKendree 69-46 Sunday.

Taylor led the way with 11 points.

NMU visits Minnesota Duluth Friday.
