Avoid playing political games

EDITOR: Over the last two decades, Tom Casperson and I waged countless battles against government over-reach. Do you remember: Michigan told its citizens they could not rake the sand on their beach? They could build a garage for one snowmobile, but not two? The couple fined more because the DEQ judged they could afford it? Or, when Republic was told they couldn’t have their 40th fishing tournament unless they did a multi-year study on the impact to fish? Together, Tom and I helped rescue homes from erosion, communities from fines and bills, and citizens from not using their own land. ...

EDITOR: I mailed this letter to Michael Glass in Nahma and would like you to print it. I really enjoy reading your letters although sometime your use of the English language, I believe, is above the average Daily Press reader, no doubt to your previous employment. I have previous employment and a lot of history with the Delta County Board of Commissioners. I have seen really good (honest) commissioners and those that are/were not (dishonest). I gauge honesty in my personal interaction with individuals, not her say, or what has been done to someone else, even if they are close to me. ...

Death threat response

EDITOR: Since reporting on death threats leveled at three county commissioners there have been several letters to your publication (me included). While a general condemnation of the threats was common to all, some approaches were distinctly different. I suggest, gentle reader, you review these for the sake of content and context. The March 19 edition of the Press contained two letters. The one from Monica Peach and Fran Majestic should be re-read and praised for its simple “Golden Rule” tone and message. How has it come to this?

EDITOR: When we were kids, it was common to yell “I’ll kill you!” at the slightest playground provocation. We then progressed w/age to it meaning “I’ll kill you at sports, racing, playing cards… etc.” Neither taunt was physically implemented, and were rarely taken with any seriousness. As we became full-fledged adults (in age, if not mentally) and made the threat after something like a “road-rage” incident or barroom confrontation, the possibility of escalated violence and deaths could result. Most parents admonished their young to not use threats like that ...

EDITOR: Commissioner Moyle, Despite our profound differences and our scathing assessment of your character, it remains imperative to affirm that violence has no place in our democratic process or within our society. While we vehemently oppose your actions and ideologies, we unequivocally denounce any threats of harm directed towards you or your family. It is perplexing to witness the contradictory portrayal of us as both “weak snowflakes” and a supposed “violent mob.” Such polarizing rhetoric serves only to further divide us and hinder productive discourse. Against all forms of violence

EDITOR: On March 14, 2024, the Daily Press headline indicated there were death threats against the three Delta County Commissioners under recall. We stand against all forms of violence, intimidation, bullying, and harassment. Retribution is a destructive force, and it’s time to end it. We want to live in a community that treats each other with respect, and we want politicians who not only serve to improve our county, but also inspire others to help build a better place.
