Fake quotes and satire

EDITOR

As an avid follower of the Daily Press and other news sources, I was dismayed to read the Letter To the Editor on Sept. 6 from one of the Daily Press’ most prolific letter writers. The letter had a title of “Democrats Constitutional Crisis.” In the letter, fake quotes about the U.S. Constitution were attributed to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warner, and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker. A 3-second check revealed that the quotes were lifted from a June 29, 2018 online site called The Babylon Bee, which describes itself as “a trusted source for Christian news satire.” I do hope the author of that letter will learn the definition of “satire”, eat his humble pie, vet his sources more thoroughly, and apologize for contributing to the divisional political atmosphere that is currently burning our country up. Both Democrats and Republicans want what is best for our country; however, they have differing ideas on how to achieve that goal.
