Rapid River boys’ track edged for Menominee Invitational title

MENOMINEE — The Rapid River boys were in contention, but came up just a point short in their quest for a track and field title in the Menominee Invitational here Monday.

Menominee squeezed past the Rockets 96-95 and third-place Stephenson scored 29 points.

The Stephenson girls were crowned champions with 91 points, followed by West Iron County 72.5 and Menominee 64.5 on this sunny and windy afternoon.

The Rapid River boys swept the sprint relays. Junior Eddie Forslund won discus at 118 feet, 5.5 inches and anchored the 400-meter relay. Classmate Clay Christoff took pole (10-0) and ran the last leg of the 800 relay. Sophomore Greg Taylor added a first in the 110 hurdles in 21.34 seconds and placed second in high jump (5-6).

Menominee sophomore Nathan Komp was a triple-winner, taking the 100 (12.45), 200 (25.12) and 400 (54.99) and classmate Darrent Butler copped high jump (5-6) and long jump (17-3.5).

Powers North Central senior Max Nason captured shot put (37-6.5) and was runner-up in disc (105-8).

Rapid River freshman Joseph Thorbon took second (17-2.5) and sophomore Caleb Roberts was third (17-0) in long jump.

West Iron senior Danica Shamion won four events, including girls’ high jump with a personal-best leap of 5-1, the 100 (13.89) directly into a stiff south wind, 200 (28.22) and 400 (1:03).

“I’ve been practicing high jump a little more,” she said. “I didn’t get my steps down right at Marquette, then I jumped five feet at Florence (Wis.). On the track, the wind killed us in the home stretch. You just had to be mentally strong.”

Stephenson sophomore Faith Cappaert took the 800 (2:42.33) and 1600 (5:51.37).

The Eagles grabbed the top three places in the 1600 and the four remaining spots in the 3200 after Menominee freshman Winley Brandt, who won in 14:09.63.

Stephenson senior Kayela Putnam captured pole vault at 8-6 and was runner-up in the 3200.

“We have a solid crew in the distances and picked up some points in the throwing events and sprints,” Stephenson coach Kate Kuntze said. “Faith did well in her races.”

Rapid River junior Emma Winling placed third in 400 (1:11.6) and freshman Kenzie Taylor took third in the 100 hurdles (21.85).

North Central was led by eighth-grader Addy Otradovec, who was runner-up in the 100 hurdles (20.13) and third in the 300s (57.44).

“It obviously helps us having eighth-graders this year.” Jets’ coach Brooke Granquist said. “Having eight girls instead of six helps us out a little. I thought Addy did well. Our numbers are low. We had only four boys here today due to baseball. This was kind of a learning experience for some kids.”

Rapid River, which ran in Thursday’s Delta County Invitational at Bark River-Harris, hosts its own invite May 2.

North Central resumes at North Dickinson Tuesday, two days before heading to Rapid River.
