Emeralds sweep Rapid River invitational

RAPID RIVER — A cool, damp and rainy Thursday belonged to the Manistique track and field teams as they swept both ends of the Rapid River Invitational.

The Manistique girls scored 106 points. They were followed by Bark River-Harris 95 and Newberry 66.

Manistique’s boys finished with 122 points, followed by Newberry 96 and Munising 58.

“This was our best performance all year,” Emeralds’ coach Cody Kangas said. “We had quite a few PRs (personal records). We were actually well-rounded today. I think everybody had a little different mindset. We had a little talk about that and the guys answered the call. We’re trying to piece things together before the (Division 1) regional.”

The Manistique girls, fresh from winning Tuesday’s St. Ignace Kiwanis Invite, were led by senior Danielle Lund who had a hand in three firsts.

“That was a real nice win,” Emeralds’ coach Erik Mason said. “The nice part is we scored in every event. We want to be a well-rounded team. We try to get different girls in different events. We can change our relays and still do real well.”

Lund won shot put at 32 feet, nine inches, discus with a season-best throw of 105-7 and anchored the 1600-meter relay (4:30.91).

Sophomore Kyra Carlson added a first in pole vault at 8-6.

North Dickinson senior Mya Grunlund won the 3200 in 12:44.3, followed by Manistique sophomore Maya Carlson in a personal-best 12:49.83 and Crystal Falls Forest Park freshman Vienna Price (13:43.21).

“Maya has developed a game plan and studies other runners,” Mason said. “She has learned how to get proper rest and nutrition. Maya also ran a season-best time (6:00.01) in the 1600 and Emma Jones had season-bests in the 100 and 200. Kyra’s jump in pole vault was a season-best by a foot and Leah Goudreau ran a season-best in the 200 (29.01).”

BR-H senior Lauren Zawada won the 100 hurdles in 18.07 and 300s (52.44) and helped the Broncos place third in the 1600 relay (4:40.22).

“It’s definitely harder to run with rain in your face,” she said. “I was worried about doing hurdles in the rain because we didn’t have to do that last year. I had a better time on Tuesday (at North Dickinson). I’m definitely learning that I don’t need to go so high over the hurdles. Overall, I think I’m doing fine, although I didn’t do very well in high jump. I really need to practice that more.”

Senior McKenzie Hoffmeyer added firsts in the 100 (13:32) and long jump (15-7) with junior teammate Marissa Ives runner-up in the 100 (13.54), just .01 second ahead of Big Bay de Noc eighth-grader Destiny Bleau, who later won the 200 (27.24).

Rock Mid Peninsula sophomore Hope Brunngraeber was runner-up in disc (94-5) and Manistique sophomore Gwen Brewster placed second in shot (30-½).

Big Bay senior Grace VanWormer tied with Newberry senior Lucie Robochova and Republic-Michigamme freshman Olivia Mattila for second in long jump at 13-7.

Other area third-place finishers were BR-H junior Hope Varoni in the 800 (2:41.2) and Emeralds’ senior Linnea Way in high jump (4-6).

Manistique senior Wyatt Demers won the boys’ 100 (11.86) and 200 (25.03), anchored the winning 1600 relay (3:52.01) and placed second in the 400 (57.43).

The Emeralds also won the 3200 relay (9:03.99) and BR-H took the 800 (1:43.41).

Manistique was second in the 400 relay and third in the 800.

Additional area runners-up were Manistique juniors Blake Mason in high jump (5-7) and Brendan Mead in the 800 (2:11.67), BR-H freshmen Gionni McDonough in the 110 hurdles (18.01) and Ben Knauf in the 1600 (5:04.44) and junior Wes Knauf in the 3200 (11:10.77), Powers North Central junior Lane Gorzinski in the 200 (25.61), Rapid River junior Eddie Forslund in disc (120-3) and Holy Name sophomore Michael Rexford (18-2).

Other area third-place finishers include Manistique junior Ben Gilroy in the 800 (2:14.09) and 1600 (5:05.38), senior Carysn Hinkson in the 300 hurdles (44.12) and long jump (17-10), Rapid River sophomore Greg Taylor in the 110 hurdles (18.51), Forslund in shot (39-1) and BR-H sophomore Matt Marohnic in the 400 (57.69).

In high jump, Taylor and North Dickinson freshman Trenton Kramer tied for third (5-5).

Mead and Gilroy helped Manistique win the 1600 and 3200 relays.
