Manistique girls’ track boasts large roster in 2024

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique High School Girls Varsity Track team kicked off its season with a bang.

The roster features over 30 girls for this year’s roster. Under the guidance of Coach Erik Mason, the team is demonstrating unparalleled enthusiasm and determination, setting a promising tone for the season ahead.

Coach Mason expressed his satisfaction with the team’s attitude and commitment following the first week of practice.

“The energy and dedication these young ladies have shown are truly commendable,” Mason said. “Their positive attitudes and eagerness to improve are exactly what we need to succeed.”

Strength in numbers has already proven to be a significant advantage for the team. With a large turnout, the athletes are able to push and support each other, fostering a culture of teamwork and motivation.

“The team has so much potential based on our numbers,” Junior Clara Cunningham said.

Senior, Emma Jones, added, “I’m excited for the fresh start with new faces and new speed.”

The first week of practice has primarily focused on foundational elements such as form running and sprint work. These exercises aim to enhance the athletes’ endurance, both cardiovascular and muscular, laying a solid groundwork for the challenges ahead. Coach Mason emphasized the importance of starting with these fundamentals to build a strong foundation for the season.

“Our workouts are definitely intense,” freshman Aaliyah Sears said. “We hope to see that our efforts will pay off this coming season.”

Additionally, to prevent injuries such as shin splints, much of the practice has taken place on grass surfaces. This proactive approach underscores the team’s commitment to both performance and safety.

“We want to ensure that our athletes are not only improving their skills but also staying healthy throughout the season,” Coach Mason explained.
