ESCANABA – A man from Menominee was arrested Monday after carrying a firearm into a high school and escaping police custody in Peshtigo, Wis.
Trevor Sterling Salwesky, 33, of Menominee attended a blood drive at the Peshtigo High School (PHS) on Monday. Peshtigo Police Officers responded to the school for a reprot of a suspicious male party who was possibility carrying a gun on his person.
According to a news release, the call originated from a student working the blood drive who said a male subject was acting “strange” and appeared to be over friendly with the student and another female juvenile who was also working the blood drive.
The student said the male party also appeared to have a “bulging” item tucked on the side under his shirt, which she suspected to be a gun. The student also said the male subject was hanging out more than normal – approximately an hour or more – after his blood draw was complete.
Peshtigo Officers arrived and located the male party inside the gymnasium. He was then moved into a private office where he was temporarily detained and searched, stated the news release.
Officers proceeded to locate a handgun loaded with one magazine as being tucked inside his shirt. Officers also located two knives and one flashlight in his pockets.
The subject was then identified as Salwesky, who was arrested and transported to the Marinette County Jail for several misdemeanor and felony charges. Upon arrival at the jail, Salwesky got out of his handcuffs without law enforcement’s knowledge.
When Salwesky was released from the squad car, pretending he was still in handcuffs, he attacked and assaulted several officers.
According to the news release, tasers were deployed, and other jail staff assisted in getting Salwesky back into custody.
Salwesky was charged with the following charges: possession of dangerous weapon at school, possession of firearm on school grounds battery to correctional officer by prisoner, battery to police officer, prisoner attempted escape, two counts of resisting officer, disarming a police officer and disorderly conduct.
All charges are referred to the District Attorney’s Office for further review. Salwesky is currently being lodged in jail pending further court proceedings.
PHS students and staff were temporarily locked down during the incident but later resumed school operations. The school released a memo to all parents as notification, as well as a press release.
Officers determined Salwesky acted alone, and there are no further suspects involved. The department stated there are no further safety issues to the public or to the school as of Monday.
