Escanaba splits doubleheader with Negaunee

NEGAUNEE — It was a mix of ups and downs for the Escanaba Eskymos here Wednesday night as they dropped game one to the Negaunee Miners 6-5 before coming back to pick up a 10-0 win in four innings in game two.

The Eskymos got on the board first in game one as Brody Ison and Ashton Rymkos each drew walks to start the game after Mikaiden Hughes reached a fielder’s choice and Rymkos advanced to third on the throw, Senior Lennox Peacock hit an RBI-single to center field to put the Eskymos up 1-0.

The Miners tied the game in the bottom of the first as Tristan Slater reached on a ground ball to bring in a run.

The Eskymos answered in the top of the fourth inning as Rymkos hit a solo home run to right field and after Mikaiden Hughes drew a walk Peacock tripled on a line drive to right bringing in a run and putting the Eskymos up 3-1.

The Miners tied it again in the bottom of the fifth as two runs scored on an error by Cannon Arnt.

“Negaunee is a good team, ” Eskymos coach Scott Hanson said. “When you play them you can’t give them free opportunities or it will get you and it got us in the first game.”

The Eskymos took the lead again in the top of the sixth inning after freshman Alex Irving singled on a ground ball to left, Ison then delivered a shot to center field for a two-run home run to put the Eskymos up 5-3.

“Those home runs were big for us,” Hanson said. “Both times it put us in the lead and we just couldn’t hold it.

The miners were not done though as Easton Gaston scored, stealing home and Devin Jurmu drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at five.

The Miners walked it off in the bottom of the seventh inning as Owen Cardinal singled to center field to score the winning run.

In game two, it was all Escanaba as the Eskymos put up eight runs in the first inning and scored 10 runs on 10 hits in the win.

Peacock and Kaiden Pastorick were both 2 for 2 in the contest and Ison and Hughes each had a pair of RBIs in the victory.

Ison got the win on the mound allowing zero runs on zero hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Eskymos return to action tonight as they travel to Cadillac.
